One Family's Story
Monday, May 3, 2010
Kim & Charles HarrisCharles Harris fell nearly sixty feet while working as an arborist two years ago and is paralyzed as a result.  The Harris family didn't know what to expect, whether they needed a lawyer, or even who to consult about a claim. What enfolded was a story of how four people had to be at their very best to save a family and showcase a workers' compensation system.

Tonight at 7PM, The American Law Journal presents "Workers' Comp: The Lawyer, the Client, the Adjuster & the Judge" with claimants' attorneys George Badey of Badey Sloan & DiGenova and Anthony Vellner of Vellner Law Office. Respondent's counsel and former claims adjuster Sharon McGrail-Szabo of Swartz Campbell weighs in and injured worker Charles Harris and his wife Kim share their experience.

Luckily for the Harris family, the judge in this case mediated between claimant's counsel Anthony Vellner and an empathetic insurance adjuster, providing the Harrises with a comprehensive, compassionate resolution. "Families who experience work injury have no idea what lays ahead," states Vellner. "Mr. Harris went to work that day, was up in a tree and left, ultimately, in a wheelchair. It shows, dramatically, what can possibly happen to anyone when they head off to work. In this instance, the comp system ultimately worked terrifically. But people need to know their rights early on, because once the process begins, it can start running very quickly."
