"Paxil on Trial"

Tonight on WFMZ-TV 69, The American Law Journal broadcasts "Paxil on Trial: Antidepressants, Kids and Birth Defects" with plaintiffs' attorney Jamie L. Sheller of Sheller, P.C., defense counsel Anthony J. Marchetta of Day Pitney, Health Law professor Barry R. Furrow of Drexel Earle Mack School of Law and Dr. Rajnish Mago of the faculty and Director of the Mood Disorders Program at Thomas Jefferson University. Sheller was local counsel for the recent $2.5 million Paxil verdict.

In 2005, a mother complained of depression and was given Paxil during her pregnancy. Her son was later born with birth defects. "This was the first Paxil birth defect case that went to trial in the country" says Sheller, "the first of over 600 that are expected in coming months." Sheller gives insight into how she and co-counsel countered defense strategy mounted by the manufacturer and how the jury evaluated the difficult case at the conclusion of the seven week of trial. The panel as a whole discusses the changes in drug product liability litigation in the past year.

The American Law Journal broadcasts to the Philadelphia metro and tri-state region on Monday nights in its longtime studio setting on CNN-news affiliate WFMZ-TV.
