A doctor cannot render a legal opinion as to whether someone is disabled or not. But his or her report will probably be the single greatest factor whether one is eligible for Social Security Disability benefits.

"I find that doctors are not swayed by 'who they are representing'," says Polonsky, "whether it's a [governmental] consultative exam or someone seeing their own private physician. The key is always communication. Claimants have to be absolutely sure to communicate everything that may be bothering them. If not, it will undermine the case."
