CARB Proposes Changes to Heavy-duty OBD Regulations (EMD Regulations) |
The current heavy-duty OBD regulations (referred to as the Engine Manufacturer Diagnostic system EMD) require manufacturers of heavy-duty engines and vehicles to implement diagnostic systems on all 2007 and subsequent model year on-road heavy duty gasoline and diesel engines. However, the EMD regulations were much less comprehensive than the OBD II regulations, requiring the monitoring of only a few major emission control technologies and containing no standardized requirements. In 2005, CARB adopted regulations which established comprehensive requirements for heavy-duty OBD for 2010 and subsequent model year heavy-duty engines and vehicles.
CARB has met with vehicle manufacturers to review the progress of these regulations and have identified the need for revisions. CARB believes that modifications are warranted and are proposing these latest regulations.
The CARB links below provide additional information on the proposed regulations.

Air Resources Board Launches "Gear Up for Clean Truck Month" in August
|
August is California Gear Up for Clean Truck Month, with the Air Resources Board launching a multi-agency campaign to make sure that trucks traversing the state's highways are in compliance with state air pollution laws.
"Our goal this month is to do everything in our power to make sure truckers know the rules and that they understand how to comply," said ARB Executive Officer James Goldstene. "All our diesel regulations were adopted with one thing in mind - protecting public health. Focusing on enforcement gives us the chance not only to educate drivers on why the regulations are important but also to ensure that truck owners investing in cleaner equipment are on a level playing field with those who are not playing by the rules."
State measures aimed at cleaning up diesel vehicles include requirements to report fleet information to ARB, employ fuel-saving technology, install diesel soot filters and replace or upgrade aging engines and transport refrigeration units.
Working in conjunction with the California Highway Patrol and other allied agencies, ARB will deploy inspectors throughout the state, focusing on trade hubs, weigh stations, ports, railyards and major points of entry into the state.
The campaign is also geared to provide advice and educational materials including information and fact sheets on how to follow regulations, maintain equipment properly, and grants and funding that may be available now and in the future to help purchase clean trucks and related equipment.

The Sign You Can Trust!
|
ASCCA has launched the new Public Relations slogan with the purpose of ensuring that the ASCCA sign is synonymous with quality automotive shops. The slogan, The Sign You Can Trust! is directed at your potential and existing customers.
This exciting new campaign was kicked off at the Summer Conference with the introduction of the new adjunct signs, The Sign You Can Trust! This new sign can be ordered to hand under your existing ASCCA shop sign.
The new adjunct sign is the first step to create public awareness that will translate into consumers looking for shops displaying the ASCCA sign. The goal of our campaign is to increase your business with new customers and help you retain existing clients. Participate in this new campaign and help strengthen the public's awareness that ASCCA shops are the shops they can trust to meet their automotive needs!
How to use the new slogan:
- Place on existing letterhead, business cards, brochures and forms.
- On your website and social media pages.
- In your printed and electronic newsletters.
- With your local advertising.
- Place on Press Releases when producing information for public distribution.
- Place the adjunct sign with the slogan beneath your ASCCA sign at your shop.
- Incorporate on promotional material produced for your shop, such as calendars, mugs, magnets, pens, etc.
