Right to Repair Initiative to be on Massachusetts Ballot in November
|
The Right to Repair Coalition announced that it has achieved its final goal of attaining 20,000 voter signatures in its ballot campaign to place the measure on the November ballot in Massachusetts. The final batch of certified signatures will be delivered to the Secretary of State's office well ahead of the early July deadline. Obtaining these signatures was the final step in the signature gathering process required to put the issue on the ballot. This announcement brings the Right to Repair signature gathering total to 126,000.

Automakers, ASA Join in Opposition to Massachusetts Right to Repair
| The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Association of Global Automakers, representing a total of twenty-six automakers, joined the Automotive Service Association (ASA) to urge the Massachusetts House of Representatives to reject the "Right to Repair" measure recently passed by the Massachusetts Senate.
Calling the measure "seriously flawed," the group says that S.2267 was created outside of the committee process and approved by the Senate despite objections from automakers, independent repair shops, dealers, and labor unions. It does not represent a negotiated agreement amongst the parties. In a letter to legislators signed by the group, automakers reiterate that they have agreed to support legislation that codifies and formalizes the existing current practice of providing service information to the aftermarket, similar to the agreement signed by all three organizations in 2002, which would provide further assurance that these resources would always be available equally and securely. In their letter, the group writes: Unfortunately, the Senate-passed bill fails to address our most critical concerns and would allow Massachusetts' innovation economy to become an island of outdated automotive technology. The Senate-passed legislation establishes new mandates that would necessitate the global redesign of vehicles, insufficiently protects intellectual property, and creates an enforcement scheme that will lead to the Commonwealth becoming a hub for business-to-business litigation over automotive parts design. The letter was signed by Matthew Godlewski, Vice President of State Affairs for the Auto Alliance, Michael Stanton, President and CEO of Global Automakers, and Ron Pyle, ASA President and Chief Staff Executive.

Don't Overstep on Criminal Background Checks
| Courtesy Armstrong & Associates, June 2012
If you are screening job applicants or current employees with a criminal background check, you may want to revisit your company policy in this area. Newly offered guidance by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) provides a blueprint on how to avoid legal liability under Title VII based on a criminal background check policy. The guidance helps you navigate new requirements for these background checks aimed at eliminating what are newly considered discriminatory practices. Making any needed policy changes will go a long way toward keeping your company out of legal hot water. Read this article to learn the right way to conduct a background check.

ASCCA One Member Can! Update
|
The One Member Can! campaign has pushed off with great momentum and we've seen just how much one member CAN make a difference!
Since the launch of the One Member Can! campaign in February, ASCCA has seen individual members throughout the state rise to the occasion to reach out and make a difference in their Chapter and for ASCCA!
Remember when you recruit a new member to send in your coupon on the bottom of the One Member Can! Membership Drive (Page 2) or send an email with your name and the name of the members you have recruited.
The attached flyers were designed by the membership committee as marketing material to be used to introduce and provide information to Chapter Leadership about the One Member Can! program.
The One Member Can! informative, 2-page flyer is designed to be printed double-sided on 8 ½" x 11" sheets of paper, while the one page poster is designed to be a tabletop piece, printed on glossy 8" x 10" stock paper - to be place next to the 2-page flyers. There is also a 16" x 20" poster available. If you would like to display a poster of that size, please contact us directly and the template will be forwarded separately.
Please take a moment to read through the marketing material thoroughly. The more you know about our One Member Can! campaign - the better you'll be at using it to engage and enlist new members! The material also contains instructions on how to report your new member sign-ups, and how you can win a new iPad.
If you need any additional information or have questions, please don't hesitate to contact Heather Vigil at (800) 810-4272 or hvigil@amgroup.us.
