ASCCA Launches New Membership Drive

At February's ASCCA Team Weekend, the Board of Directors approved our new membership drive campaign for 2012, One Member Can. This campaign is designed as a tool to help us reach our goal of doubling our membership, and to remind each of you that EVERY member truly CAN make a difference in the growth of our Association.

The attached flyers were designed by the membership committee as marketing material to be used to introduce and provide information to Chapter Leadership about the One Member Can program.

The One Member Can informative, 2-page flyer is designed to be printed double-sided on 8 ½" x 11" sheets of paper, while the one page poster is designed to be a tabletop piece, printed on glossy 8" x 10" stock paper - to be place next to the 2-page flyers. There is also a 16" x 20" poster available. If you would like to display a poster of that size, please contact us directly and the template will be forwarded separately.

Please take a moment to read through the marketing material thoroughly. The more you know about our One Member Can campaign - the better you'll be at using it to engage and enlist new members! The material also contains instructions on how to report your new member sign-ups, and how you can win a new iPad.

If you need any additional information or have questions, please don't hesitate to contact Heather Vigil at (800) 810-4272 or hvigil@amgroup.us.

Businesses Fined for Air Quality Violations

Settlement of 33 cases generates $57k for community colleges, $170k for pollution control.

The Air Resources Board has announced that during the fourth quarter of 2011, it settled 33 cases of air quality violations by trucks and buses, mostly for failure to properly conduct and pass self-inspections aimed at measuring vehicle smoke emissions to ensure state requirements are met.

Of the $226,950 collected, $170,400.75 went to the California Air Pollution Control Fund to support research to improve California's air quality. In addition, $56,549.25 went to the Peralta Community College District to fund classes at participating California community colleges under the California Council for Diesel Education and Technology program.

Fines totaled $226,950, none from this group exceeded $25,000. The five companies paying the highest amounts were:
  • Dole Fresh Fruit, fined $24,750 for failing to properly label its diesel-powered Transport Refrigeration Unit (TRU) generator sets according to ARB regulations.
  • Hendrickson Trucking Inc., fined $19,875 for failing to properly self-inspect its diesel trucks to assure the vehicles met state smoke emission standards.
  • Dynaelectric Los Angeles, fined $15,750 for failing to properly self-inspect its diesel trucks to assure the vehicles met state smoke emission standards.
  • United Food Group, LLC, fined $13,725 for failing to bring the company's TRUs into compliance with state requirements, and for failing to properly self-inspect ts diesel trucks to assure the vehicles met state smoke emission standards.
  • Harrison Trucking, Inc., fined $13,175 for failing to properly self-inspect its diesel fleet to ensure compliance with state smoke emissions standards.

Diesel exhaust contains a variety of harmful gases and over 40 other known cancer-causing compounds. In 1998, California identified diesel particulate matter as a toxic air contaminant based on its potential to cause cancer, premature death and other health problems.
