BAR Notification to Smog Shops Licensed Prior to 2007 - Bank Information Compromised
|
UPDATE: ASCCA was advised by one of our members (who spoke to their bank) that if no action is taken by the Smog Station to close financial accounts, as recommended by BAR, that the bank will not be held responsible for any losses that may occur as a result of the security breach. If your shop was licensed by BAR prior to 2007, please contact your financial institution and take immediate and appropriate action to protect yourself from unauthorized access and fraudulent activity on your bank accounts.
Today BAR mailed out letters to all smog check stations licensed with BAR prior to 2007, notifying them that bank account information was compromised. The matter is under criminal investigation. BAR recommends that stations immediately contact financial account issuers and close accounts, requesting that accounts be "closed at customer request". Unfortunately, these types of privacy and security breaches are becoming common occurrences. If your shop was licensed by BAR prior to 2007, please contact your bank and take appropriate action to protect your financial information.

ASA to Take Over Management of NASTF Secure Data Release Model
|
The National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) announced that the Secure Data Release Model (SDRM) will now be managed by the Automotive Service Association (ASA). The SDRM was previously managed by the Associated Locksmith of America (ALOA) and moves to ASA per the organization's charter now that ALOA has relinquished management responsibility. David Lowell, former Executive Director of ALOA has been contracted to manage the day-to-day operations of SDRM by ASA. According to ASA, ALOA and ASA had joint responsibility for the SDRM, with ALOA developing the SDRM software, registering vehicle security professionals and performing background checks on new and renewing applicants. SDRM is assuming responsibilities that include vehicle module initialization and Theft Related Parts program.
