Assessment Update |
Assessment News From Mrs. McVicker
All third grade and seventh grade students across the state of Tennessee will take the CRA (Constructed Response Assessment) on November 8th and 9th. This is a pilot of a new assessment asking students to answer open ended questions, instead of only multiple choice questions, in a standardized testing format. All third and seventh grade students present at school will take the test, but no results will be returned to the school for any of the assessments. There will be no make up assessments for students who are absent. Third graders will take two 45 minute tests: one in reading and one in math. Seventh graders will also take a science portion. Ultimately, the state plans to add some of these types of questions to TCAP in future years.

1st and Second Grade Assessment Discontinued
Murfreesboro City Schools and Discovery School have discontinued standardized testing of first and second grade. For several years, we gave the Terranova Test and then switched two years ago to the Stanford, or SAT 10 assessment. First and second grade assessment has always been optional for our district. Many districts had already opted out of standardized testing for early primary students.
Gifted Assessment
Many parents have expressed confusion related to the assessment procedures for intellectual giftedness at Discovery School. In order to be assessed for giftedness, students must demonstrate an educational need for assessment; in other words, their needs can not be met in their current academic placement without additional support. This is the requirement for all special education assessment. Because of the nature of the accelerated and compacted curriculum at Discovery, very few students meet that burden of "proof." Having said that, Murfreesboro City Schools does screen all students in the fourth grade for intellectual giftedness. Fourth grade students whose TCAP scores and creativity rating scales meet the criterion set out by the state of Tennessee are assessed. In addition to that, students in the sixth grade who meet the criterion are also assessed at Discovery School as a part of our transition into middle school. We want all students who leave us to have any paperwork in order so that they might immediately begin receiving necessary services from our sister districts. Please contact Michelle McVicker with any specific questions via e-mail at michelle.mcvicker@cityschools.net or through the school office.. |
Spirit Day at Newk's |
Newk's Spirit Day is all day on Tuesday, November 16th.
This is a half day for students so you can enjoy Newk's for lunch or dinner. Please write Discovery School and your teacher's name on the back of your receipt. The teacher with the most participation wins a dessert tray. |

The girls did a great job cheering at the Robotic competition. They helped the Robotics team win most spirit.
The girls are having a fabulous time and bring a lot of excitement to the games. They also enjoyed performing at the pep rally. Thanks to Coach Lori Burden for volunteering her time and experience in getting the girls ready for the first game. Kim Reynolds and Christina Bernitt have assisted Lori and we appreciate their time as well. |
Student Council News |
Red Ribbon Week
Student Council had a wonderful Red Ribbon Week. Thanks to all that purchased wrist bands and candy grams. The funds raised will help support all of our projects this year.
Basketball Concessions Help
We need help with basketball concessions. If you are able to volunteer your time or any food for the basketball home games this year please contact Laura Filtness. The games are Nov. 8, Nov. 11, and Dec 2. We need help from 5-8 pmeach home game. If you are not able to work, but can donate food (hotdogs, pre-popped popcorn, chips, soda, water) that would be great. We are in need of another crock-pot to be used on basketball home game evenings. If someone will let us borrow one from now until Dec. Please send it in to Ms. Filtness laura.filtness@cityschools.net.
Please Collect Pull Tabs!
Please remember to collect and turn in pull tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. Student Council representatives will turn in the tabs from his/her classes on meeting days.
Angel Tree and Santa Workshop
I can't believe it's the holidays already, but it is. Once again we will be sponsoring an angel tree and santa workshop for the students of Bellwood. After Thanksgiving we will put up our tree at the front of the school. Families may choose an angel to sponsor this year- helping to provide that angel with gifts they might otherwise not get. Gifts will be collected until Dec. 10th and each gift should have that particular angel number written on it.
We will also be helping to host a Santa workshop on Dec. 8th. During the Workshop preschool students are able to "shop" for gifts for their parents. The students are allowed to pick out small gifts that they want to give their parents and have it wrapped by special elves. What a wonderful way to help all families have a holiday celebration this year. Starting Nov. 10th we are asking our DSRR families to bring in small items (a piece of jewelry you don't wear anymore, a present you never opened, something perhaps you have been thinking of selling in a garage sale) to donate to the workshop. All presents should be turned into Ms. Filtness. |
Teachers requesting help! |
Calling all volunteers!
Ms. Jones - She needs help with the two gardens. They are now so far away from the classroom that she needs parental supervision of the kids who want to work there now and then. She would like to plant a fall garden but needs parental help. Can you help? If you can help, please e-mail Ms. Jones at cindy.jones@cityschools.net.
Ms. Filtness - Could really use some parent volunteers helping make signs at school. Anytime they can stop by this week would be so helpful. Please contact Laura Filtness at laura.filtness@cityschools.net. |

PTA Task Force |
Let's Talk About It!
The PTA is the advocate for you and your child. At this time there are many changes affecting our kids' education on the federal, state, and local levels. We are your PTA and we are your voice. Several parents have expressed concerns about what these changes will mean to our high achieving kids. We want to hear your thoughts. If you have any opinions that you would like to share or are interested in being part of a task force, please submit your ideas and contact info to dsrrpta@gmail.com. If it is needed we will form our task force from this pool of information and you will be contacted by email. Thank you. |
