Thursday, October 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Discovery School Library
At our first-ever evening "Coffee with the Principal," Dr. Clark will talk about Professional Learning Communities, and then we'll have some time for questions from parents.  Appetizers and desserts will be served.
Movie Night with Mom Thursday, October 21 at 6 p.m. 
 
Valiant Movie PosterTreat Mom to a fun night!
Join us tonight for "Movie Night with Mom" at 6 in the cafeteria where the movie Valiant will be featured. 
 
Pizzas from Papa John's will be available for $6/box or $1/slice, Cokes are $1 and the popcorn is free!  Be sure to bring a lawn chair, your pillow and a blanket!

Red Ribbon Week BannerRed Ribbon Week is October 25-29!

Help us celebrate our theme of "Color My World Drug Free" next week!  This special week is to remind everyone about the dangers of drug use.

 

Red Ribbon Theme Days

Monday, October 25:  Hugs Not Drugs - bring your favorite stuffed animal to school day

Tuesday, October 26:  We May Be Crazy, But We Don't Do Drugs - crazy hair day (see Wear All Red Day below)

Wednesday, October 27:  Don't Let Drugs Turn You Inside Out - wear your clothes inside out

Thursday, October 28:  Too Cool to Use Drugs - wear your coolest sunglasses

Friday, October 29:  Drugs Are Spooky - dress up like a character from your favorite spooky book

 

Red Ribbon WeekRed Ribbon Week Contests

Poster Contest - Design an anti-drug poster with the theme "Color My World Drug Free."  The last day to turn in posters is Thursday, October 28.  Teachers will vote for his/her favorite.

Door Decorating Contest - Decorate your door with a drug free theme by Wednesday, October 27.  Student Council officers will vote on their favorite door, and the winner will be announced Thursday, October 28. 

Essay Contest - Write a one page essay answering the question "How does being drug free make your world more colorful?"  Essays are due Tuesday, October 26.

Wear All Red Day - Tuesday is a challenge to each class to wear all red.

Prizes include posters, ribbons, certificates, stickers, bracelets, Frisbees and bookmarks.

 

Candy Grams $1 on Monday, October 25 during Lunch

Candy Grams will be sold on Monday for $1.  These fun messages are personal "anti-drug" messages to friends delivered with candy.  It is a great way to encourage your peers to be drug free.

 

Bracelets $1 during Lunch

We are also selling "Color My World Drug Free" bracelets this week for $1.  All Candy Grams and bracelets will be sold during lunch.

 

Basketball Concessions Help

We need parents to sign up to help with concessions at each home basketball game.  Parents don't have to have Baksetballa student on Student Council to help.  The games are October 26, November 1, November 8, November 11 and December 2, and volunteers are needed from 5-8 (or anytime between). 

     We also need volunteers to donate food to sell, including hotdogs in a crockpot, candy, soda, popped popcorn, etc.  Please contact Ms. Filtness at laura.filtness@cityschools.net for more information or to volunteer/donate. 

 

Student Council Parent Meeting

There will be a parent meeting for parents of Student Council representatives on Thursday, October 21 at 3:15.  This meeting was originally scheduled for the 19th.   If you are unable to attend the meeting but still want to help with Student Council this year, please e-mail Ms. Filtness. 

 

We Are Renaming Bubbles!

DolphinWe are renaming Bubbles, our beloved mascot.  From now until October 22, all students can create a new name for our mascot and turn it in to Ms. Filtness.  On October 26, the Student Council will choose the Top 10 or Top 20 depending on the number of entries.  The top names will be placed on Survey Monkey where students can pick his/her favorites.  All voting will be done online.

Congratulations to Grace Apigian and Madeline Seymour for being named Student Council Historians and to Michael Scharf for being named Website Manager! 

 

Please Collect Pull Tabs!

Please remember to collect and turn in pull tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House.  Student Council representatives will turn in the tabs from his/her classes on meeting days.

Murfreesboro City Schools FoundationThe Murfreesboro City Schools Foundation Luncheon will be held at the Stones River Country Club on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.  Tickets are $30.00, and the Discovery School will have a table.  For reservations please contact Jenny Copeland at  jenny.copeland@cityschools.net.  Please support the MCS Foundation by coming out for food, fashion, and fun!

We are so thankful to Teresa Harmon at JoZoara Coffee Shop!  For the second straight year, she has so graciously provided drinks and delicious food for our all of our book fair shoppers!  Last year, JoZoara declared our school book fair their favorite collaboration of the year! Teresa will be providing complimentary iced lattes Friday morning for our last minute shoppers.  Be in the gym at 7:30 if you'd like to sip and shop!  Please help us thank JoZoara by visiting their shop sometime you're out and about. The Chef Place to Donate for Teacher Birthdays!

Julio Orantes of the Chef Place is donating cookies and measuring spoons for each of our wonderful teachers on their birthdays.  Thank you, Julio, for making our fabulous DS teachers feel extra special!  Visit the Chef Place at 113 North Maple Street for a wonderful meal to enjoy there or take home!

 
Lost and Found
 
Lost and FoundPlease remind your students to check the lost and found at school (located near the front office).  There are several clothing items, water bottles, etc.  Please stop by this week while you are at the book fair to make sure that your child has not lost something.  Any items remaining in the lost and found will be donated to Goodwill.  We will let you know the date of that donation in advance.
