Dr. Clark

Dr. ClarkNew and Improved Schedule

As I am sure that you have noticed, we have gone through more than one schedule this year.  That is very unusual.  As a rule, the schedule is set before school starts and lasts for one year.

This year was different.  Murfreesboro City Schools is establishing Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in each building and as a district. PLCs encourage collaboration among teachers.  We are all responsible for all of the children.  PLCs help us to use the schedule as a tool to help each child experience academic growth.  The focus of the schedule has to be on academic growth for each child, one skill at a time.

If you have followed TCAP data for Discovery, you will recall that we have excellent performance in achievement.  But, our scores for value added, an index that measures growth, are low.  It is very important for our district and for our children that every single child shows growth every year.

So that was the challenge, how to help each child to achieve growth.  The way to do that is look at each child and each skill to identify areas that need improvement and areas that we can enrich.  The schedule needed to be revisited to provide more instructional time in large blocks to tackle this job.  All aspects of the schedule were carefully scrutinized.  We are utilizing EAs and MDAs differently.  Instead of cutting and laminating, they are assisting with instruction.  We need to employ every strategy that we can to set the stage for academic success.

Change is difficult, even when it is for an excellent reason. It has been an adjustment for me, for the teachers and for the students.  I ask for your patience and support as we try to provide a top-notch educational experience for your child.  Let's accept nothing less.

Discovery School Basketball Teams

BasketballBasketball Teams Gear Up For the Season
This year fourth, fifth and sixth grade boys and girls tried out for the basketball team.  Fourth grade was included for the first time.  That is really exciting for Discovery because we have some great 4th grade players!  Our first game is scheduled to be played at John Pittard on October 26th. Once again, Jason Page will return to coach the boys' team, after a fantastic season last year. We have a new coach for the girls.  (Mrs. Carnes, formerly Pepelea, has a daughter playing in another school and could not coach.)  Jackie Pickle will coach the girls' team.  Jackie was an amazing talent on MTSU's girls' basketball team.  She is doing her student teaching in the county system now.  Jackie is very excited about the opportunity to coach.  We look forward to a great season of basketball.

Discovery School is Going to Chicago!

Chicago Trip Informational Meeting
Thursday, September 23 5:45-6:30

The trip with the most votes was CHICAGO!
Thomas tours has put together a very exciting trip during spring break, March 19th-22nd!
A representative with Thomas Tours will be present in the cafeteria on Thursday, Sept. 23rd from 5:45-6:30 to pass out and go over the specifics with a brochure about the trip. She will cover payment options, trip details and answer any other important questions you may have. Volunteers Needed
With just a little of your time you can make a huge difference with the PTA!

Purchasing and Nominating Committee

We have just a few volunteer needs still unmet & would appreciate any & all help in filling them!  We are currently searching for one person to serve on the Purchasing Committee. Members of this committee serve with the Treasurer in making purchases & allocating funds.  We also need five members to make up our Nominating Committee. As you might guess, this group is responsible for nominating next year's Executive Board.  Past officers are perfect for this position, & once the job is done, you are done!  If you are interested -- or know anyone who would be a great fit -- in either of these positions, please contact Amy Massengill at 429-8930 or mom2bugnbee@comcast.net.

Morning Greeter

Finally, we hope that those of you who are able to drop your children off early might be able to fill a need for someone to be a greeter on the gym side.  To help alleviate traffic congestion in the morning, the doors to the gym are opened at 8am and children are allowed to gather in the gym for 15 minutes before the doors to the school open.  Tricia Thweatt, who is not only a PTA Board member but is also employed by Discovery, has been greeting children at the door, but is now responsible for watching the children in the gym from 8am-8:15am.  She obviously cannot be in two places at once.  Would you be willing to be a greeter at the door from 8am-8:15am in the morning?  Ideally, we would have enough parents volunteer that we could work out a rotation schedule that does not require one person to be there every day.  If you can help, please contact Tricia at triciathweatt@comcast.net.
