Grandparents Week Is Next Week

Grandparents DayGrandparents Week is September 13 - 17
(except for Wednesday, 1/2 day for students).
Lunches will be held daily for children and their grandparents in the gym.  Everyone will need to enter through the front doors.

The PTA Hospitality Team is still looking for parent volunteers to help.  We need 9 volunteers per day (except for Wednesday).  The hours are 10:50 - 1:00 each day, but we can divide up the times if needed.  Just let us know when you can help!  Contact Gwen Dyer at gwenedyer@yahoo.com or 890-0967.

Counseling News

Student CouncilStudent Council Elections
Student Council elections will be held on the afternoon of Friday, September 10th.  During the election ceremony that day, students will have the opportunity to give a one to two minute speech about their leadership qualities and goals for Student Council.  We are excited that over 100 students are running for an office this year.

Pop TabsPop Tabs
It is that time of year again to start collecting pull tabs!!  From now until Friday Nov. 12th students can bring in their pull tabs (off aluminum cans) and place them in the class baggie.  When the bag is full they will turn it in to Mrs. Filtness and start collecting again.  The class that fills the most baggies will win a popcorn party with Mrs. Filtness. Good luck!

This exciting project will help us raise money for the programs run by Ronald McDonald HouseRonald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Nashville while bringing attention to our mission to "keep families close" during the critical illness of a child.  The RMHC of Nashville program, including the 32-bedroom Ronald McDonald House and the Ronald McDonald Family Room inside the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, raises funds by collecting and recycling the pull tabs from aluminum cans.  Many schools have participated in this activity for the benefit of the House over the years.

Last year, over 46,000 students from 103 schools from across middle Tennessee, southern Kentucky and northern Alabama took on the challenge of collecting the most aluminum tabs from cans that can be recycled with all proceeds benefiting RMHC of Nashville.

Highlights from last year:
·  183,561 ounces or 11,470 lbs. of pull tabs were collected
·  13,764,944 can tabs were recycled @ $ .40 lb. equaled $ 4,588

Share America with Ms. Li!

Include Ms. Li on Your Next Family Outing
As most of you know DSRR is privileged to have Ms. Li with us from China.  What you may not know is that your family has the opportunity to show Ms. Li what living in America is all about.  You may wish to have her in your home during a family celebration or holiday.  Or simply have her along as you take a family walk along the greenway or visit a flea market.  Are you planning to attend an estate auction, a fall festival or maybe the Adventure Science Center over fall break?  Whatever you choose, Ms. Li is eager to get to know her students and their families and to make the most of her experience in America!  All family/home visits will be coordinated through Shea Russell.  Please feel free to contact her at shearussell923@gmail.net.
Curb Appeal

VolunteerVolunteer Help Needed with Gym-Side Curb Signs
We have amazing volunteer support from our parents and can't thank you enough for that!  We still have one unfilled position which won't take much time, but is very much needed!  We need someone who arrives early to the pick-up line at the gym to be willing to set out the curb sign (sandwich board) on days that an after-school announcement needs to be made.  Obviously, this would not happen everyday.  Lisa Wells is our coordinator and is more than willing to prepare the sign, but her schedule does not allow her to arrive to school for pick-up early enough to set the sign out.  We have had someone step up to take care of the front office side (thank you, Danielle Moore!) and would really appreciate it if the same would happen for the gym side!  If you can help, please contact Lisa at 907-8849 or wells1004@bellsouth.net.  Thank you, Amy Massengill.
September 15th Half-Day

Reminder:  We will be dismissing at noon on Wednesday, September 15!
Fun Mathematics!

Math TeacherMr. Nuell's Class Is Working with Integers!
Mr. Nuell's class is working with integers!  His students have noticed some very interesting things with numbers, including the fact that every number on a number line has a negative counterpart on the other side of the number zero.  They discovered that zero is like a mirror on the number line.  They have come up with some very interesting patterns with math problems using our new-found number skills such as 0+1=1, -1+2=1, -2+3=1, etc.  A few students even pointed out that we could write 2+(-1)=1.  This is leading us toward seeing how addition and subtraction are essentially the same thing -- essentially, with subtraction, we are adding negative numbers!
Cell Phone-Free Zone & Other New Policies

No Cell Phone Use!Cell Phone Use in Pick-up Line, Skateboards, RipStiks and Silly Bandz
Please refrain from cell phone use while in the drop-off and pick-up lines.  This will ensure greater child safety as well as improve the efficiency of our system.  Also, don't forget that the school has banned skateboards, RipStiks and Silly Bandz (all shaped rubber bands).
