How Sweet It Is! Smart Cards Update
Our Smart Card sale is off to a great start! If we continue this strong, we will reach our goal! Thank you to all of you for your support. There are two more turn-in days remaining. They are Monday, August 16 and Wednesday, August 18. Several parents have contacted me about making a donation in lieu of selling cards and that is perfectly acceptable. The donations do not count toward the prizes from the Smart Card company, but they do count toward the ice cream and pizza parties. In an effort to encourage and motivate the kids to participate, several of our teachers have "sweetened" the challenge by volunteering to eat a chocolate-covered bug if the students reach our goal! Again, thank you very much for your support. Please contact us if we can help in any way! Sarah Woods, Chair woodss@comcast.net Shannon Bush, Co-Chair xraygalsb@yahoo.com |

Lunch Charges | |
Please remember to keep your lunch accounts current Discovery School's office needs our help. Murfreesboro City Schools will no longer allow the cafeteria to accept lunch charges. The office must pay those charges and then get reimbursed by the parent/student. It's important for parents to respond to the Balance Reminder letter immediately.
It is very easy to set up account reminders at Parent on Line. If you need your account information to log in, please call the office. Kindergarten parents will be receiving their information soon. Thanks for your help! |

6th Grade Trip to Turkey
We've Gone Global! Students Win Awards at Space CampTurkey!
Alex's Turkey Experience by Donna Abernathy
"I'm going to Turkey!" Alex excitedly announced when he climbed in the car after the first day of school a year ago July. "Yeah, right," I responded. There was no way I was sending my child halfway around the world, I thought. That thinking changed, however, after I learned more about this educational travel opportunity from Mrs. Burt, who attended Space Camp Turkey in summer 2009, Murfreesboro City Schools' Mel Prater, who had attended with other local children through the years and from representatives of the camp, who traveled to Murfreesboro to help nervous parents like me better understand their program. Sure, family and friends questioned my decision, but I remained steadfast as we began saving money, getting travel documents and clearing the schedule for Alex to make the trip. Alex departed with the group on July 2, his 13th birthday, for what will probably be remembered as his trip of a lifetime. Sure, he could have gone to space camp in Huntsville, but the camp is really only a part of the experience. He not only learned how to be an astronaut but, more importantly, how to work with a mission team made up of youths from around the world. What I wanted my child to get from this trip - and I believe he did - was to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of other people and other cultures of the world. He learned that kids share the same interests and dreams no matter where they live. As a matter of fact, Alex loved his international experience so much that he is already making plans to apply to return to camp as an intern and ultimately as a counselor.
Discovery Students Take on the World and Space too! Eleven Discovery students (1/5 of the sixth grade!) represented the USA at Space Camp in Izmir, Turkey this summer. They were led by Kristy Mall, sixth grade teacher, and Michelle McVicker, assistant principal, who attended as a guest of the program. The trip was sponsored by Global Friendship Through Space Education and was a continuation of a correspondence and NASA videoconferencing program that the sixth grade participated in throughout the year. Only three schools in the US were present, with students from New York, New York and Long Beach, California attending alongside students from Greece, Turkey, Israel, Palestine, Poland, Russia, and Kazakhstan. Students spent a week learning how to be astronauts, working simulators, and creating team projects ranging from rocket construction to designing a base on Mars. They worked in teams that were comprised of Greek and Turkish students as well, and were treated to instruction by U.S. Astronaut Charlie Walker, who taught them how he went from being an engineer on the Space Shuttle projects to being the first corporate engineer to become an astronaut on the Space Shuttle! He served on the Discovery with local astronaut, Dr. Rhea Seddon! We are also very proud to announce that Mason Bray was named the "Right Stuff Award" recipient as the top camper out of 498 campers, and was presented a medal by Astronaut Walker. We also had students whose teams were honored for outstanding aerospace design as well as for outstanding Mars base designs! We are so proud of their outstanding accomplishments! To finish the 11 day trip, students got to tour two of the seven ancient wonders of the world (Ephesus and the Temple of Artemis), visit the House of the Virgin Mary, take an afternoon swim in the Aegean Sea, and even work in some shopping time, where they were impressed with the beautiful hand made goods and food that the Turks had to offer. Asked what her favorite part was, Julia Beasley said that the experience "...changed her life! Meeting new friends from other countries was awesome! I learned so much about space that I never knew, loved the country and the people there, and the sites we visited were indescribable. I want to go back again next year and am already saving my money and working on getting Red Cross certified as a babysitter to make money." "I am so proud of the students and how well they performed!" said Kristy Mall. "We had such a wonderful experience, and the kids were amazing ambassadors not only for our school, but for our country. The teachers from other countries were so impressed with their friendliness and willingness to help others. This will be an experience that will stay with all of us for the rest of our lives!" Mrs. Mall and Mrs. Burt are already working on setting up videoconferences and joint projects with the incoming sixth graders and their Turkish partner schools to continue the outstanding program this year. |

Updates from Dr. Clark |
Dr. Clark visited China
Dr. Clark visited Beijing and Tianjin, China along with 400 principals, superintendents and school board members from across the United States. The group visited schools as well as famous sights, including The Great Wall. This visit is part of an effort to exchange information about education and learn from each other. The trip was in preparation for our visiting Chinese teacher, Mrs. Li. Dr. Clark traveled to Washington with Mrs. Jones to meet Mrs. Li and bring her back to Tennessee. Discovery School families will have the opportunity to host the Chinese teacher for a weekend in their home. Let the office know if you are interested.
Revising Enrichment Clusters
Enrichment Clusters were a topic of discussion at our faculty meetings. Seven of our teachers attended Confratute in Connecticut this summer. I asked them to get more information and recommendations regarding enrichment clusters. They had a chance to learn more about clusters, even talked to Joe Renzulli. Here are some revisions that have been made. 1. Clusters will be offered twice a year, the second and fourth nine weeks. 2. Students will all fill out an interest inventory to help us select general topics of interest to them. 3. Students who are experiencing academic difficulty or who are behind in projects or assignments will attend a study skills session instead of an enrichment cluster. We're hoping to make enrichment clusters better than ever!
Come see how we have grown!
During the summer, our library was expanded. We decided to incorporate the book room books into the library. Mrs. Maxwell now works out of the library. Also, because bookfair was so very successful, we were able to add several new titles to the library. Stop by and see the addition. It looks great.
MATH...It is all in the Numbers!
Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade are taking tests to make sure that the standards in math were met for last year. Teachers will use the results, classroom performance indicators and additional classroom observation to assign students to a math class based on their performance. This will allow for appropriate challenges and support for each student, whether they need a little extra support or they are ready for a challenge.

Teachers Professional Development
Seven Teachers Attend Confratute Mrs. Bunyi, Mrs. Burt, Mr. Winton, Mrs. McCarthy, Mrs. McAfee, Mrs. Davis-Louis and Mrs. Verbic traveled to Connecticut this summer for a week of study and networking with other educators of gifted students. PTA and Explorer Fund made this trip possible. They studied with Joe Renzulli and colleagues at the University of Connecticut. Here are some of their comments. "It changed my teaching." "I came back so excited about school." "It is the most amazing professional development that I have ever had!" The came back with new ideas and resources and will be sharing that throughout the year at faculty meetings. Thank you PTA and Explorer contributors!!! We had more attending Confratute from a single school than any other school there.

Volunteers Needed!!! | |
We still have openings for volunteers within the PTA. Some jobs could take as little as an hour all year! The most pressing needs that we have right now are people to help with the curb signs. If you are someone that gets to the school early for pickup this could be the perfect opportunity for you to help our PTA.
We are also looking for someone willing to take the reins for the spring break school trip. The initial legwork has been done and it's been narrowed down to three locations. We'll need someone to organize.
These are only our most urgent needs ... not our only needs! If someone wants to volunteer elsewhere, we can definitely fit you in!
