UPCOMING EVENTS
TODAY: No school due to the inclement weather.

Writing AssessmentTUESDAY: TCAP writing assessment begins. Your children should have brought home instructions last week. If you didn't see them, check your child's backpack.

THURSDAY: PTA Board meeting, 6:30 p.m., school conference room

FEB. 9: PTA General Membership winter quarter meeting, 6:30 p.m., gymnasium. During this meeting, the Nominating Committee will announce the proposed slate of officers for 2010-2011 and the president will review some of the recent purchases made to benefit the school. Kindergarten, first and second grade students are scheduled to perform under the direction of the school's music instructor, David Winton.

FEB. 11: Teacher appreciation lunch.

FEB. 15: President's Day, no classes.

Washington, D.C.FEB. 19: Washington, D.C., trip payment due. Those who have signed up for the spring break trip to Washington, D.C. must complete their payments to Thomas Tours by this date. Any questions about payments should be directed to Linda Fleming (Linda@thomastoursinc.com) at Thomas Tours. A few seats remain on the bus for the trip, but full payment is required by the deadline. The trip is open to all Discovery School families, teachers and staff. Click here for details and an itinerary.

CONGRATULATIONS TO REFLECTIONS WINNERS
Congratulations to the Reflections winners. Judges evaluated an impressive collection of art, literature and musical compositions on Dec. 11 on the way to naming the top entries that will represent the Discovery School in the state fine arts contest. Read about the winners at the PTA Web site.
GET INVOLVED!
Resolve to get involved with PTA in 2010. The Discovery School PTA needs you! Every parent is invited to get involved with PTA work by volunteering to fill a leadership position, help with an event or serve on a committee. With more than 40 committees, there's a job that suits your time and skills. Read job descriptions on the Volunteer page.
CAREER DAY
Dr. John AshWe need presenters! If you or someone you know can come speak to our students on Career Day, we would like to know by Feb. 17. Career Day 2010 will be May 7. We are interested in parents or grandparents who would be willing to share their career with our students. If you are able to come on May 7, please contact Linda Cox, linda.cox@cityschools.net,  or Lindsey Robertson, linznurse@aol.com.
DISCOVERY SCHOOL JUNGLE BOOK NIGHT
Jungle BookThe Discovery School Family Night for "Jungle Book," featuring several Discovery School students, has SOLD OUT. However, tickets are still available for other performances if you would like to attend. The show runs Feb. 5-21. Call the Center for the Arts at 615-904-2787 for details.
EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION CELEBRATION
The Discovery School at Reeves-Rogers will be the featured school at this year's City Schools Foundation's Excellence in Education Celebration, scheduled for Friday, March 5, at 7 p.m. at Stones River Country Club.

Tickets for the cocktail dress dinner are $250 per guest. For an additional contribution of $50 a person, you may also attend the "Full Flush" pre-party at the new "Green" home of Gloria and Ted LaRoche.

CALLING ALL MATH, SCIENCE AND TECH LOVERS
A new 4-H Engineering Project Group has started at the UT Extension Offices. This club will cover topics from different engineering fields: civil engineering (building bridges & structures), mechanical engineering (how machines work), electricity and chemistry. This is the perfect program for any fourth-12th grade students who like hands-on science, enjoy working with machines, and who want to build!
 
Meetings will be held Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the UT Extension Offices at 315 John R. Rice Blvd. in Murfreesboro. This program is free of charge. There is no class limit. For more information, please contact  Rebecca Henry at rhenry2@utk.edu or call her at (615) 898-7710.
DAR WINNERS ANNOUNCED
The Discovery School at Reeves-Rogers has eight DAR essay winners. They are Matthew Clark, 5th grade (Taylor), Cooper Baughn, 5th grade (Taylor), Rachel Massaro, 5th grade (Taylor), Erika Martinez, 5th grade (Taylor), Kaitlyn Kloss, 6th grade (Mall), Shannon Miller, 6th grade (Mall), David Fox, 6th grade (Burt) and Celina Viravouth, 6th grade (Pepelea). Their entries will go to state competition.
FUNDRAISING
Tyson labels: Monthly Tyson label contests began in January. Be a "good egg" and help the Discovery School "feather their nest" by earning 24 cents for every Tyson Label.
Boxtops for Education
Box Tops: Every class has a collection bin in its classroom, so it's convenient to send in your tops at any time. For more information, please contact Jennifer Kropog.
