YOUR PTA IS LISTENING
|

When
members contact a PTA Member at Large (MAL) with a concern, complaint or
suggestion that affects all students, it is brought to the Board of Managers'
attention. While some issues require additional research or communication with
school authorities, others can be addressed quickly. Here are a few of the
issues your MAL and Board acted on last fall:
1.
Complaints about traffic problems associated with morning and afternoon car
lines. MAL Michelle
Palmer researched the issue to see how other schools handle their car lines and
presented the information to the Board and Dr. Clark. Following, car line
workers hand distributed to drivers a flyer with suggestions and reminders for
easing traffic congestion.
2.
Concerns about poor nighttime lighting around the school perimeter and in the
parking lot. MAL
Sarah Woods met with school officials and worked with Murfreesboro City Schools
facilities personnel to review the problems. It was determined that a number of
existing lights were in need of repair and these repairs were completed.
3.
Concerns about adequate security and admittance of visitors during school
hours. Though
providing school security is not within the PTA's scope of duties, Board
members agreed that it is our duty to advocate for the safety of all students.
In November and December, the group reviewed and recommended certain procedure
changes and equipment upgrades to improve security. President Elect Candace
Feltz researched and presented information about security procedures in
Williamson County schools.
4.
Request to put a water fountain on the school playground. Such an improvement would have to
be approved, budgeted, and installed by Murfreesboro City Schools. No such
capital improvement has been approved for Discovery School due to expense,
health concerns and potential vandalism problems.

PTA BEHIND THE SCENES: COMMUNICATION
|
|
This new monthly feature of the newsletter will shine the spotlight on the many unsung heros of
PTA-those who work behind the scenes to make our programs and projects
flourish. Discovery School PTA has more than 40 committees all
operating on volunteer "fuel."
Communications Committee: Good communication is at
the heart of our active PTA. The PTA uses a variety of communications
tools to keep parents informed about school and PTA activities.
Discovery School has been a leader among Murfreesboro City Schools in
using electronic communications for timely distribution of information.
Here is who's working behind the scenes:
Karen Scott serves as committee chair and also
oversees electronic communications. She prepares the e-mail reminders
you receive about activities such as spirit nights and online surveys
sent periodically to solicit parent feedback. She is also the person
responsible for compiling and printing the student directory.
Steven Chappell is the committee co-chair and
serves as the newsletter editor. He collects information and news from
all PTA committees to report in the newsletter distributed via e-mail
twice monthly. He is also responsible for updating the Google calendar
parents can use to keep track of school activities.
Leigh Anne Brown has two jobs. She updates the
curbside reminder signs and works to get them in place to provide
last-minute reminders about PTA and school activities. She also uses
her scrapbooking skills to maintain the PTA bulletin board located
just inside the school's main entrance.
Carolyn Tumbleson has recently taken on the job of
publicity. She will be writing news releases and submitting photos to
area media outlets to keep Discovery School students and teachers in
the spotlight.
Mona Sharma, an information technology professional, provided the knowledge and skills to launch the new PTA Web site, www.discoveryschoolpta.org. Tracey Lannom spearheaded the assembly and dissemination of the school directory. |
BELLWOOD THANK YOU
|
From the staff at Bellwood-Bowdoin PreSchool:
"Thank you so much for the wonderful support that you gave to the
children of Bellwood. We don't have to tell you how helpful it was to
our families.
Every child deserves "Santa." You provided that for the Bellwood children. Thank you so much.

FUNDRAISING
|
Tyson labels: Hope everyone has been saving their Tyson chicken labels while we've been "cooped up" over the break. "Eggs"citing news!!! Monthly Tyson label contests will begin in January. Look for an information sheet coming home with your child today. Be a "good egg" and help the Discovery School "feather their nest" by earning 24 cents for every Tyson Label. That's not chicken feed!
Box Tops: A Box Tops competition is coming your way! We hope you saved all your Box Tops
labels from the holidays. Every class will have a collection bin in its
classroom, so watch for more information on the upcoming competition! Visit the Box Tops page on the PTA Web site to learn which classes and students earned prizes
for their collection efforts. Get details about the Box Tops program. For more information, please contact
Jennifer Kropog.

Executive Board for the 2010-11 school year.

Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer and are elected by the general
membership.
If you are a PTA member willing to serve on the Board, we would love to hear

NIGHTS OUT SUCCESS!
|
Kid's Night Out and Teacher's Time Out were
great successes! A special thank you to all of the teachers, staff and
parent volunteers--for without them it would not have been a success.
The children were AWESOME, which makes for the possibility of having
another Night Out highly probable. Also, the Sock Hop originally
scheduled for February will be moved to a date later in the school year.
Keep a look out for a new date announcement soon! |
SPRING BREAK TRIP REMINDER
|
If you have signed up for the Washington, D.C., trip during spring
break 2010, please be sure your payments to Thomas Tours are current.
To check the payment schedule, download a copy of the trip information. Thomas Tours advises there are still a few seats left on the bus, so
it's not too late to register.
|
LUNCH ACCOUNT REMINDER
|
The Murfreesboro City Schools administration allows a maximum of two lunch charges per
student. When a reminder letter is sent home notifying that your child has an
outstanding balance, a prompt response to the letter is necessary to
ensure the student will still be able to eat a hot lunch. For more information, contact Tracy Giles in the school office, or e-mail her at tracy.giles@cityschools.net.

DISCOVERY ONLINE NEWS
|
Did you know that Discovery School students are producing their own newspaper of events taking place at school?
Check out their work at http://discoveryschoolnews.wordpress.com/. The students cover just about everything, and may include articles about PTA events!
Mrs. McCarthy and Steven Chappell teach the newspaper class as an after-school activity on Wednesday afternoons. If your child would like to participate, have him or her see Mrs. McCarthy for information. Or, just check out the budding journalists' work on the Web site.
