CHILI COOKOFF TODAY!
|
Don't forget tonight is the First DSRR PTA Chili Cookoff. At right is a thumbnail of the winning poster design, created by Grace Mayfield, a third grader in Mrs. Bunyi's class. You can click on the thumbnail to see a full sized version of the poster.
The teacher of the class represented by the winning People's Choice Chili will receive $25 in his or her room fund from the proceeds. Bring your family to sample chili prepared by teams and eat dinner today from 4:30-6:15 p.m. The cost is $4 per person, and preschoolers eat free. A bake sale will also be held by the band to raise money to purchase instruments for the school so every sixth grader interested may participate in band. The band would also like to be able to pay for the upkeep of the instruments the school owns.
After the chili cookoff, stay for the PTA General Membership Meeting that begins at 6:30 p.m.
After the meeting, watch the fifth graders perform the two square dances they have been working on with Lori Turnbow, Michael McGee and David Winton for the past three weeks!

LOST AND FOUND
|
The Discovery School's Lost & Found is overflowing with items!
Please stop by the cafeteria to see all the items displayed on the stage. We have lots of coats, sweaters, and hoodies, as well as water bottles, hair bows, belts, hats, and even bath robes.
Please check out our collection of items ASAP. Also, parents, please help us return lost items by labeling EVERYTHING your child brings or wears to school, especially jackets/coats, hats, gloves/mittens, lunch boxes, water bottles, and layered clothing that could possibly be removed as the mild, fall weather warms in the afternoon.
All unclaimed items will be donated to charity on Thursday, Dec. 17.

KIDS' NIGHT OUT
|
An invitation will be coming home with your child later this month for a "Kids' Night Out" at the school.
The PTA will be having a snack and a movie and possibly a simple craft for the students so their parents can either go shopping (kid free), or have dinner, or just a quiet time without the kids.
Kids' Night Out will be Friday, Dec. 11, from 6-9 p.m. in the DSRR gym. We are requesting that the students already have had dinner; however, it the child is in ESP for late pick-up or if someone needs to they may drop their child off with a sack supper and they may eat dinner at the school. The reservation deadline will be Monday, Dec. 7.
|
TEACHERS' AND STAFF TIME OUT
|
The PTA will be giving the Teachers and Staff a "Time Out" on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. This will give them an opportunity to shop or run errands while their children are here at the school. Invitations will be in the teacher's boxes in the office on Nov. 30, and the deadline to participate will be Dec. 7. We will provide pizza, crafts and games for the children.

GREEN TEAM NEWS
|
Pumpkin Power:
We will recycle pumpkins for Mrs. Jones' garden the Monday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 30).
Members of the PTA's Green Team collected more than 40 pumpkins on the Monday after Halloween.
Pumpkins are placed in a compost at the rear of the school and will be used as organic fertilizer for a garden in the spring. The garden is an annual project of Mrs. Jones' class.
We will collect again the Monday after Thanksgiving.
The Green Team needs volunteers to help collect pumpkins during morning dropoff on Monday after Thanksgiving.
Volunteers will accept pumpkins during morning drop-off at the rear of
the school where kindergarten students are picked up in the afternoons.
Pumpkins may also be deposited at the side rear doors on the left side
of the school any time on the weekends preceding the designated
drop-off Mondays. If you have any questions, or can volunteer to help, please contact Jessica Murray (jandsmurray@msn.com).
Aluminum cans, newspapers
and printer cartridges: Is your recycle bin overflowing after Fall Break? Remember you can recycle your aluminum cans, newspapers and printer cartridges at Discovery School. The bin for newspapers is at the back of the school at the end of the driveway. The bin for aluminum can recycling is in the front parking lot. Deposit printer cartridges in the collection boxes just inside the school's main entrance

SHAPE THE FUTURE OF THE PTA
|
While it may seem early, it is time to begin the process of electing our DSRR PTA Executive Board members for the 2010-2011 school year.
The first step of this process is to form a nominating committee. The nominating committee is a five-member group whose task is to recognize and recruit candidates for the elected membership of the DSRR PTA.
Any current PTA member is eligible to serve on the nominating committee. If you would be willing to serve on the DSRR PTA Nominating Committee, or would like more information on the obligations of a committee member, please contact Tricia Thweatt at 904-9281 (home), 330-2294 (cell) or triciathweatt@bellsouth.net by Dec. 1.

DISCOVERY ONLINE NEWS
|
Did you know that the children of The Discovery School are producing their own newspaper of events taking place at The Discovery School?
You can check out their work at The Discovery School News Web site, available at http://discoveryschoolnews.wordpress.com/. The students cover just about everything, and may include articles about PTA events!
Mrs. McCarthy and Steven Chappell teach the newspaper class as an afterschool activity on Wednesday afternoons. If your child would like to participate, have him or her see Mrs. McCarthy for information. Or, just check out the budding journalists' work on the Web site.

FUNDRAISING
|
Kroger Cards: Please remember to keep using your cards at Kroger, particularly during the holidays, to keep those fundraising checks coming in to the school!
Printer Cartridges: Thank you so much for sending in so many cartridges. Keep them coming!
Boxtops: Visit the Box Tops page on the PTA Web site to learn which classes and students earned prizes
for their collection efforts. Rather than hold monthly contests, we will be holding Winter and Spring contests. Box Tops received now will count toward the Winter contest. Help your child's class earn rewards by clipping
and sending in labels. A special Box Tops collection box is now located
in each classroom. Get details about the Box Tops program. For more information, please contact
Jennifer Kropog.
Campbell's Soup Labels: Get ready! The holidays are coming and there
will be an abundance of Campbell's soup labels to be had. Watch for
upcoming contests.
Tyson chicken labels: Did you know that for every 100 Tyson A Plus
labels we send in, we will receive $24? We can make as much as
$12,000 in one year! Look for the Tyson Chicken A Plus label on all of
your Tyson products and turn them in to the Tyson A Plus box by the
office. |
REFLECTIONS COMPETITION UNDERWAY
|
The entry period is under way for the Reflections contest, a fine arts competition open to all Discovery School students. The deadline to enter the contest is Dec. 9, and judging will be held Dec. 11. Find entry forms, guidelines and other details on the PTA Web site.
