WASHINGTON, D.C., DEADLINE EXTENDED
|
If you missed the Sept. 30 cutoff to reserve space on the Washington, D.C., spring break trip, we have good news for you! Thomas Tours has extended the deadline a few more days, as some seats still remain on the bus!
Discovery School families, teachers and staff have another chance to sign up, but you need to contact Linda at Thomas Tours ASAP if you are interested, because hotel rooms must be booked in the near future. Remaining seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The trip itinerary, payment forms and other information are available on the PTA Web site. Families wishing to save money by rooming with another family to get the quad rate may contact Donna Abernathy with roommate requests. She will work to pair families when possible.

FALL COLORS
|
The school is decorated for fall thanks to the efforts of the Green Team's Outdoor Beautification Committee.
Thanks to project chair Chris Sarkowski for spearheading this project. Thanks to Donna Abernathy for donating the corn, Molly Nemeth for donating the hay and Tim Tipps for donating the pumpkins. Also, special thanks to Staci, Aubrey, McKae and Gracie Sarkowski for the actual decorating.

Thanks to all those who responded to our survey regarding the leadership qualities we want in a new Director of Schools. A compilation of our responses was delivered to the search firm by Legislative and Advocacy Chair Vanessa Smythia. HELP DISCOVERY SCHOOL WIN $50,000!
|
Only a few days left
Box Tops is currently running a contest called "The Big Clip." The school winning the grand prize will win $50,000, and two first-place winning schools will win $25,000 each! All you need to do is register to support Discovery School at The Big Clip. Then, go online daily to enter our school in the contest from now until Oct. 31.
Please note that the Web site includes two entries for The Discovery School. It lists The Discovery School at Reeves Rogers, which is the entry you must choose for the school to receive credit. However, it also lists the old school, Bellwood. Please do not select that site, as it will not credit us.
In addition to the contest, The
Discovery School continues to collect Box Tops for Education. The school earns 10 cents for each box top collected, and the
school can earn up to $20,000 over the course of the year.
This year's Box Tops coordinator is Jennifer Kropog, and she can be reached at jckropog@comcast.net if you have any questions.

| RECYCLING NEWS
|
Pumpkins:
We will recycle pumpkins for Mrs. Jones' garden on the Monday after Halloween (Nov. 2) and the Monday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 30). Volunteers will accept pumpkins during morning drop-off at the rear of
the school where kindergarten students are picked up in the afternoons.
Pumpkins may also be deposited at the side rear doors on the left side
of the school any time on the weekends preceding the designated
drop-off Mondays. If you have any questions, please contact Jessica Murray (jandsmurray@msn.com).
Aluminum cans, newspapers
and printer cartridges: Is your recycle bin overflowing after Fall Break? Remember you can recycle your aluminum cans, newspapers and printer cartridges at Discovery School. The bin for newspapers is at the back of the school at the end of the driveway. The bin for aluminum can recycling is in the front parking lot. Deposit printer cartridges in the collection boxes just inside the school's main entrance

The entry period is under way for the Reflections contest, a fine arts competition open to all Discovery School students. Find entry forms, guidelines and other details on the PTA Web site. Questions about the competition should be directed to Chair Molly Nemeth. |
| CHILI COOKOFF |
Think you make the best chili around? Dust off that recipe and plan to enter the Discovery School's first chili cookoff.
The cookoff will be held Nov. 16 prior to the PTA general membership meeting.
If you have a special chili recipe to enter into the contest, chili entry titles are due to cookoff coordinator Lavy Little by Nov. 11. Check your e-mail for more details on this exciting event in the coming weeks!
