SPRING BREAK CHANGE TO AFFECT WASHINGTON, D.C. TRIP
|
The state has officially changed the dates of TCAP testing,
and The Rutherford County School Board has changed its spring break to March
22-26 to accommodate the new testing dates. Murfreesboro City Schools is expected
to amend the nontraditional calendar, which includes The Discovery School, to
reflect the dates of March 22-April 2 as the new Spring Break; however, this
must be approved by a vote of the board on Aug. 25 to be confirmed.
The central office has said that these dates are not likely
to be debated or contested in any way. As a result, the dates of the Washington
trip WILL change, with a likely departure date of Saturday, March 20, to
coincide with the county's spring break. This also means we will be traveling
to Washington during "prime time" for school trips, and will
therefore pay more for hotel rooms. We hope to have revised dates, details and
rates available at Thursday night's Washington Trip Interest meeting. At that
time, we will survey parents to determine if the trip remains feasible for
those who are interested.

LEGISLATIVE AND ADVOCACY COMMITTEE THANKS
|
Legislative and Advocacy Committee Chairwoman Vanessa Smythia would like to take
this opportunity to thank everyone for being such great supporters of our
children and our school during the recent debate and vote over the Central
Magnet School admissions policy. "Thank you does not seem like enough when I
think of the hours spent researching facts, calling/writing/emailing
our school board members and meeting with each other to make sure our children
get a fair chance at a magnet school after leaving the Discovery School," Smythia said. "You
all, as are all of our Discovery School students, the 'cream of the
crop.' Thank you so much for all the help, advice and support during this
challenging time with the admissions policy."
PTA President Donna Abernathy also thanks all the parents
who volunteered their time to participate in strategy sessions, contacted board
members and attended board meetings to advocate for our children. "Though we did
not prevail, we demonstrated that Discovery parents' commitment to their
children is second to none," Abernathy said.
