Registration and the first day of classes are just around the corner. As such, we want to make certain all of our parents and students are prepared for the new school year. This newsletter will provide all the information and links you need to get started on the right foot.Registration
Discovery School registration is Thursday,
July 16, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. To make the process easier, the PTA has put together
this handy checklist (link to PDF) that details everything returning and new parents need to know about registration. Some highlights from the checklist include:- What to bring with you (for example, proof of residency, such as a recent utility bill)
- Registration stations
- New parent and student orientation information
- Fees and optional purchase information
We've also compiled a list of all the supplies your child will need to start the year. Please click on the appropriate link below for your child's grade and supplies list. Kindergarten Supplies List First Grade Supplies List Second Grade Supplies List Third Grade Supplies List Fourth Grade Supplies List Fifth Grade Supplies List Sixth Grade Supplies List
Also, we will be taking orders for Discovery School T-Shirts during registration. We are using the same shirt as last year, so if last year's shirt is still wearable, you don't need to purchase a new shirt. T-shirts are $10 each. Please complete this order form and bring it with you to registration if your child needs a new shirt. Remember, these shirts are used to identify our children for safety reasons on school field trips, so it's important that every child have a shirt. Parent orientation and new student social Parent orientation and a new student social will be held Thursday, July 16, at 6:30 p.m.
Parents will gather in the school cafeteria while new students gather in the school gym.
Principal Dr. Linda Clark invites all parents to attend an informational
meeting in the school cafeteria to learn more about the Discovery School,
meet administrators, hear about the school's active PTA and get details about
the Explorer Fund.
New students in grades 1 through 6, meanwhile, will attend a social hosted by the PTA in the
school gym. Incoming students will
receive school tours and have the opportunity to meet new classmates before classes begin to help them get used to their new school.
Boo Hoo/Yahoo! Breakfast Wednesday, July 29, 8:30
a.m., school cafeteria Though it
may be sad for parents when kindergarteners are ready for their first full day
of school, it's time to give them their wings and let them fly! The PTA invites parents of kindergartners to join other Discovery School who well remember what it's like to say that first big goodbye. Enjoy
breakfast while socializing with other parents.
New teachers, staff and teaching assignments We welcome one new staff member and one instructor to Discovery School. Angela Bunyi joins the faculty to teach third grade. Tracy Giles replaces the retired Janie Campbell as the school's secretary/bookkeeper. In addition, several teachers have switched grades this year. The complete list of teachers by grade is:
Kindergarten Jenny Copeland Teresa McCarthy Minerva Smith First Grade Carrie Graham Emily McGee Kristen McKnight Chandra Valput Second Grade Julie Aspinwall Brook LaRoche Suzie Trussell Third Grade Angela Bunyi Karen Cook Elizabeth McPhee Fourth Grade Shavon Davis-Louis Sarah Fleming Shea Payne Fifth Grade Cynthia Jones Aaron Nuell Lora Taylor Sixth Grade Stacey Burt Kristy Mall Melissa Pepelea
Remember road construction Please remember that Greenland Drive from just in front of The Discovery School all the way to Rutherford Boulevard is being rebuilt, which means the entire surface is being removed and replaced. This construction will continue at least through the end of September. During this time, much of this stretch of Greenland will be one lane. Keep this in mind and plan your drop offs and pick ups accordingly so your children will not be late to school.
Learn about the Explorer's Fund Though it is not a PTA project, the association fully supports the Explorer's Fund, a principal's discretionary fund. It was conceived to add funding to our already outstanding school in an effort to strengthen our children's opportunities over and above what the Murfreesboro City School's budget can afford. The Explorer Fund seeks both corporate and individual sponsorship. Parents are invited to stop by the Explorer Fund table at registration to learn more about this year's goals.
Central Magnet School reminder Everyone should have received an e-mail last week about possible admission standards for the new Central Academic Magnet School. These standards are supposed to be introduced to the Rutherford County School Board during its schduled work session on Monday, July 13, at 5 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Rutherford County Schools offices at 2240 Southpark Blvd.
The Discovery School PTA's position is that no student should
be grandfathered in (admitted automatically without testing), and that Central's
program should be a new start for each child who lives in Rutherford County. Each child should have to take
and score well on the same entrance examination. Furthermore, siblings should
not be grandfathered in, but should test for admission also. Since middle and high
schools for all students are county schools, then county and city school
children should be granted admission on abilities not on residence in the
county or in the city.
Please call your school board member and all
school board members on this very important issue. We request you call
rather than send e-mails so that members are sure to get the message on time. The link
below will take you to the Web page containing members' names and phone
numbers.
