Discovery School does the
School House Rock
Recently several Discovery School students were featured in the Murfreesboro Center for the Arts production of SCHOOL HOUSE ROCK LIVE! Jr! directed by Michael McGee.  The production ran for two weekends, Thursday thru Sunday, May 7-17.  The Discovery School students are Sarah Alexander, Marlee Bratsch, Danielle Brown, Sophia Hall, Madison Huffine, Chloe Keating, Adam LaPorte, Natalie Madigan, Taylor Matteson, Kinsley and Madison May, Jackson Nelius, Maddy Perrien, Kendall Reynolds, Madeline Seymour, Rachel Soetje, Rob Tank, and Anna Waldecker.  Former DS students, Sierra Fortney, Jay Hicks and Jeffrey LaPorte plus future DS student Chamberlin Little were also in the double cast of 45 members.

The show was a HUGE success, with DS parents, Lavy Little and Julie Seymour, stepping in to run lights and sound.  DS parent and staff member, Trish Huffine, also pitched in with the box office and various other duties.

Michael wishes to express that he is very proud of the kids' performances and very thankful to those and other parents.  A "special thanks" also goes to Rob Tank for all of his extra duties.

The Discovery School and Chase Scott
are recognized for achievement in the
Duke Talent Search

Among all schools in Tennessee, The Discovery School at Reeves Rogers had the highest number of students recognized by the Duke University Talent Identification Program during the 2007-08 school year.

4th/5th Grade Talent Search participants can learn more about their academic talents by taking the EXPLORE test.
This eighth-grade exam serves as an optional above-level test for fifth and sixth graders in the talent search. The test results and their explanations give students insights into their academic abilities. Testing also allows students to compare their scores with their own academically-advanced peers and with eighth graders. 256 fifth and sixth grade EXPLORE test-takers earned a composite score in the 99th percentile or higher and will receive a Duke TIP medallion in honor of their achievement and be invited to a recognition ceremony in their state.

Congratulations to Chase Scott of the Discovery School for being one of 18 students in the state of Tennessee invited to be honored at our state ceremony.
Danielle Brown to test for her Black BeltDanielle Brown

Danielle Brown is a 4th grader in Mrs. Davis-Louis class.

Danielle has been recognized by her instructors, her dedication and hard work has advanced her to test for her Black Belt in October 2009.    She has been training at Bill Taylor's Bushido School of Karate for about 3 1/2 years.  We are so proud that she is achieving such a level of accomplishment and wish her the best with her testing requirements.

Dear Discovery School Parents,Danna Abernathy

In an effort to continue to improve all avenues of communication with Discovery School parents, the PTA will be redesigning its Web site over the school break. We expect the new site to launch sometime before school resumes in July. Thanks to Mona Sharma who is taking the lead on that project. Thanks also to Sheraz and Shahnela Hanif who are also helping with the site's makeover.

The Compass, our popular PTA newsletter, is increasing its staff to provide more of the news our school community wants. Steven Chappell, a Discovery School parent and director of student publications at MTSU, will team with longtime newsletter editor Karen Scott to put out issues of the newsletter over the summer and during the 2009-10 school year.

The PTA Executive Committee met on Wednesday, May 20, at 12:30 p.m. in the PTA room to conduct a strategic planning session for the 2009-10 school year. Anyone with thoughts or concerns that should be addressed by this group is asked to contact Donna Abernathy at dlfcomm@bellsouth.net.  When you receive your survey this week, please take a moment to let us know how we can be the best PTA and school possible!

The PTA Membership, Fundraising and Communications committees teamed to help welcome the families of incoming students who attended an orientation program on May 7. When classes begin in July, the Discovery School will welcome 60 kindergartners and 23 new upper grade students. We're excited about welcoming these new families into our school community and look forward to involving the parents in PTA volunteer opportunities.

Thanks to all the parents who took time out of their schedules to attend Coffee with the Principal on May 6. We're wrapping up the first year of these parent-administration networking opportunities and feel they have been a huge success. Look for more of these to be hosted by the PTA Hospitality Committee during the next school year.

Thank you to everyone in our school community who came together to support families and faculty in our school affected by the Good Friday tornado. Your generous donations, which were collected and distributed by the PTA, totaled $1866.40.
