Unplug and Read Week! Read to Succeed Logo
The week of Feb. 15th-21st is Read to Succeed's "Unplug and Read!" week.  Here are a few suggestions for fun activities to try at home after you have unplugged your computers, TV's  and other electronic gizmos.  These were posted on Read To Succeed's website.  Challenge your family to unplug and really reconnect to each other.

Host a progressive reading party with friends!  Pick a favorite story or author.  Go from house to house and have food and festivities related to a story from the author or theme from a book!

Movie night without the movie:  Pop the popcorn and have fun reading aloud!

Kitchen closed night:  Order-in your favorite take out and spend the free time reading.

Take turns reading poetry out loud to each other! Be dramatic!

Reading tent:  Grab the sheets, blankets and flashlight to create a family reading tent.  Everyone crawl in and have fun reading!

Theme night:  Create a theme night based on your child's favorite book.  Make something yummy related to the story (ex:  green eggs and ham).

Library night:  Haven't been to the public library in a while?  Don't have a library card?  Pack the family in the car and take a trip to the Linebaugh Library!

Community events:  Check out community calendars and the Read To Succeed website to find out about special reading events in the community and plan to take the family to one.
Read to Succeed's website: http://www.readtosucceed.org/unplug.htm

Have a picnic in your living room!  After eating, stretch out on the floor and read your favorite books.

Read a recipe with your child and then cook together.

Visit a local nursing home and read to someone who could use the company.

Remember....UNPLUG AND READ!!!!!
PTA Seeks Webmaster

PTA Web Master
The PTA is in need of one or more parents interested in setting up and maintaining the association's Web site. At the end of the school year, our longtime, faithful Web master Sheraz Hanif will be stepping down and a replacement is needed. We'd like to immediately recruit a parent for this job so that we can coordinate the changeover and evaluate the current site to determine possible changes. To volunteer or just ask questions, contact Donna Abernathy at dabernathy@bellsouth.net or 896-2372.

2009-10 PTA committees need you
Have a hand in enhancing the educational experience at the Discovery School for your child by stepping up your involvement in the PTA. The organization needs parents interested in serving as assistant chairs for committees during the next school year. Assistants serve a year under a committee chair before rising to the chairmanship the next school year. For information about leadership opportunities, contact president elect Donna Abernathy at dabernathy@bellsouth.net  or 896-2372.

Join The Tennessee PTA for "The Day on the Hill"
The Tennessee PTA has invited us to the Legislative conference (The Day on the Hill) in Nashville! This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in finding out more about how the legislation process works.  If you feel your 5th or 6th grader might be interested you could bring them too. A lobbyist is coming to speak about what they do and the importance of their job.  A mock trial will take place on Tuesday (the students there will argue their points on a phony bill).  We will be given information on what topics are the hot topics and what affects our children and the schools.  Many legislators will be available for questions on Wednesday morning. This event is happening on February 17th and 18th(Tues. and Wed.). The cost is $20 per student without the dinner and $50 per adult or student with the Tuesday evening dinner. The students would gain the most knowledge on Tuesday afternoon 1:00~5:30. The adults would have information provided on both days. Please contact Amy Ouellette via email jaouellette@tds.net ASAP if you would like more information.
Saturday Academy at Vanderbilt for the Young (SAVY)
Saturday Academy at Vanderbilt for the Young (SAVY) will have a summer program for qualifying gifted students entering grades 1-7 in the fall of 2009.  The classes will be held at University School of Nashville.  They are small classes designed for the exceptionally talented and motivated learner.  The program will run July 13-17 and July 20-24.  Applications and course descriptions should be available sometime later in February.  For further details check out its webpage at http://pty.vanderbilt.edu/savy.html  or contact Kim Bundy at kimberly.bundy@Vanderbilt.Edu  615.322.8261.

FEMA for Kids
http://www.fema.gov/kids
This site has plenty of resources for kids on how to be prepared for disasters. Read about the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning, and what the Richter scale is. The site details what kids should have in their activity survival kit and how to protect their home from disasters. There is information on canine heroes who have been specially trained to search and find people who were trapped in a disaster area. You can find out what to do if someone is hit by lightning, and check out a tornado-safe room built by middle school students.

Factory Tours
http://factorytoursusa.com

Have you ever wanted to tour the Blue Bell Creameries in Brenham, TX? The National Braille Press in Boston, MA? How about the United States Mint in Denver, CO? The John Deere Pavilion in Moline, IL? Traveling to Washington? Why not make time to stop by Mukilteo and tour the Boeing Everett factory? If you are interested in antique woodworking machinery, visit the Blue Ox Millwork factory in Eureka, CA. This Web site has more than 500 factory tours listed by state. Each tour lists entry fees, hours of operation, and contact information. What a great way to discover interesting factories in your area!
Would you like to see your child's face in The Compass?  Please send pictures of school events to dcscottkd@aol.com. If your classroom event, or just a great event for our students to attend, is not listed on the Calendar, please send the information to Karen Scott.  Thank you!
