 | Regional School-Business Summit
| |
Dr. Perrino is a Board Member of the Fairfax Partnership for Youth (FPY) and Immediate Past Chairman of the Greater Falls Church Chamber of Commerce. One of his goals in both capacities has been to forge an alliance between local chambers of commerce and existing local public school business partnership programs.
Dr. Perrino and Kieran Sharpe, Board Member of the Falls Church City School Board and FPY Board Member have organized a school-business "summit" to be held November 10, 2011. The keynote speaker for the event is Congressman Gerry Connelly. The purpose of the summit is to discuss ways in which local chambers of commerce and school-business partnerships can work together to encourage individual and corporate involvement in tutoring and mentoring students in local public schools. It is hoped that this alliance will result in a significant increase in the number of adult tutors and mentors in the public schools of Arlington County, Fairfax County, and Falls Church City, Virginia.

 | Tutor Profile: Running for a Cause
| |
NVTS is proud of our outstanding math, statistics and physics tutor, Hina Ayub, who ran the Boston Marathon for the second time earlier this year. Hina exemplifies excellence in academics, fitness and community service. Here is her story in her own words:
For most marathoners, running the Boston Marathon signifies the pinnacle of their achievements. I was very excited to have re-qualified for this race (I first ran it in 2007) and wanted to make it even more special. Therefore, I decided to fundraise for one of my favorite nonprofits, Compassion Over Killing, a national animal advocacy group that focuses on introducing more vegetarian-friendly dining options, both at home and while eating out, and on uncovering the abuses of factory farming. As a volunteer, I am heavily involved with this group and work closely with the directors on several campaigns. I successfully raised over $700.
This race, held on 4/18/2011, was my 19th marathon (and counting!). I started running marathons during my third year of college; after reading that Oprah had run the 1994 Marine Corps Marathon (MCM), I decided to make it my New Year's resolution to do the same!

What makes me incredibly happy is that I have inspired several friends to take up running and to run their very first marathons. I am also a vegan, and show people by example that it's possible (and easy!) to live a compassionate lifestyle and still build a strong body.
