Greetings!
By now you have probably been to Back to School Night and even received the first interim report from your child's school. The first report card of the year is only five weeks away.
If this concerns you or your child, provide them with the help they need to succeed before they fall behind and announce "I can't do it!"
Sign on to Blackboard, talk to a teacher or guidance counselor, or call us - be proactive. You may be surprised by how much your child can manage the homework/studying drama if they have the tools they need.
In this issue, we suggest a resource for parents of high school students and the value of taking a proactive posture.

Tutoring: Taking a Proactive Posture
|
"Mom, leave me alone!"... "Sally, you do not seem to get it. You
are a junior and this year is critical! What are you going to do next year when
your friends are all applying to college?"... "I don't care! Just leave me alone!" Sound familiar? This all too often confrontation can be
avoided through some simple proactive steps. Hiring a tutor may be the first
step and is tantamount to purchasing life insurance. Sounds strange? By hiring
a tutor, you have transferred the responsibility, burden, and risk
to a third party - kind of like insurance, right? The truth is that a third party will derive much more
efficient and effective results than most parents can achieve. If you and your
spouse work full-time and come home after a long day at the office, does it not
make more sense to enjoy the time you have with your child rather than engage
in the nightly "battle of the books?" If your child is a junior in high school,
you have two very valuable years left to enjoy them for what they truly are and
should be - your children. Even if you both have doctoral degrees in subject areas in
which your child is struggling, you are still Mom and Dad to your child. Their
perception of you is not that of an educator. They view you as either a
provider or an adult role model, not as an educator. So, do yourself and your spouse a huge favor and call
us. Take a proactive approach to this
vexing problem. We have been at this for more than 15 years. We are here to
help you bridge the inevitable gap that develops between you and your child as
he or she enters the teen years. |

Resource for Parents: New Book by Two Virginia Principals |
The Insider's Guide to High School
A Parent's Handbook for the Ninth Grade Year by Tim Healey and Alex Carter
Check out this Parent's Handbook written by two principals, both of whom have served large high schools in Virginia. They point out that while we all know that the ninth grade is difficult for students, it is also a critical and difficult period for parents, as they must
learn to approach their children as teenagers - while still
maintaining the necessary control and guidance to ensure their teenager's
directed growth and success.
The two
veteran principals provide parents with an
insider's view on how to best prepare, support, and coach their rising
ninth graders. They
lay out the basic steps parents should take to prepare their ninth grade
student for success in today's high school classroom. Using these
steps, the book helps parents and their teenager develop a plan for
success, improve communication, and learn to work together for a common
goal.
The companion volume by the same authors, The
Insider's Guide for High School Students: A Handbook for the Ninth Grade
Year is appropriate for eighth and ninth grade readers.
