The Rewards in Helping Kids
|
We have all heard the expression "The Children Are Our Future!" We have also heard it said that young adults today are disrespectful, lack focus, and lack a sense of community. These two conflicting opinions are at the heart of why I believe it is imperative that adults give back to their communities by helping kids. If we want to ensure a positive future for the nation, and if kids truly are our future, each of us must commit to helping a kid in need.
I have found tremendous personal reward in tutoring and mentoring kids and young adults during the past twenty years. Involving myself in the public schools in Arlington and Falls Church has enabled me to engage in numerous civic and professional activities. Some ask me how I am able to juggle so many activities at once. My response is that working with kids and young adults energizes me. It permits me to put life into perspective and it reminds me from where I came. It reminds me that when I was young, I needed mentors and role models. Without them, I would not be where I am or who I am today.
Toward this end, as Chairman of the Greater Falls Church Chamber of Commerce, I have begun a program that brings together three pre-existing school-business partnership programs in Arlington, Fairfax, and Falls Church for the first time. Each of these programs has been very successful in their own right and has provided students in need of assistance with mentors from school-business partners throughout the Northern Virginia area. The idea behind the consortium of all three programs is to provide opportunities for individuals who, for example, may work in Fairfax but live in Arlington or Falls Church the opportunity to work with a student before, during, or after work.
With the cooperation of the respective business partnership programs in each jurisdiction, the potential for adult tutoring and mentoring in our schools is enormous. This is good for kids, it is good for business, and it is good for employees. Ultimately, it is good for the nation. President Obama has challenged all Americans to look beyond their own self-interest to begin rebuilding America from the bottom up. Helping kids who need academic assistance or just a helping hand is an excellent way to send a message that children really are our future! If you are interested in joining the effort to volunteer in our public schools, please call me at 703-534-5779.
