The Tillicum How
Friends of Camp Chief Hector YMCA Newsletter Apr 2009
Contest

Contest Winners
We had a great response to the "Name the Newsletter" Contest: thank you to all who responded. If you sent in your mailing address, your prizes will be in the mail shortly!

The selected name, Tillicum How, says interesting things about camp. The phrase translates very roughly as People Hello, and it comes from two different First Nations sources. Tillicum (meaning "people") is from a west-coast trade jargon. How (used mostly upon greeting/ parting) is from the Dakota-Siouan languages.

The mix of languages in the name Tillicum How reflects the Camp Chief Hector YMCA's mission to represent diversity within our community. The words also remind us of the aboriginal cultures' influence on camping's early supporters, such as Earnest Thompson Seton. The interesting mistranslation of the phrase that is used often at camp ("Tillicum how how") reminds us of the sometimes naïve understandings we have, while at the same time points to the discoveries that are still available to us. And, finally, the new meaning ("well done!") we have given to a mistranslation indicates that we have made amongst ourselves a valuable and unique vision of relationships with nature and with each other. Thanks to Shann Ross for this intriguing suggestion!

Greetings!

Hello Friends of Camp Chief Hector YMCA.

Welcome to our Second Alumni Newsletter and welcome to spring!

Thank you for your wonderful replies to the previous Alumni Newsletter. Your correspondence is important and very much appreciated. I hope you are all well and that we are still looking after one another. The economy is difficult these days, but, thanks to your continuing support, Camp Chief Hector YMCA continues to enjoy excellent buildings, programs and YMCA Strong Kids assistance.

This year, thanks to the generosity from our Growing Strong Together Campaign, we continue to upgrade our water systems. As well, we are planning for the most appropriate out-tripping center re-build. The Outpost Camp in Yaha Tinda has been re-developed. New programs are being offered, and most importantly, our 2009 Strong Kids Campaign is on-track. If you would like to add your support to the Strong Kids Campaign, please contact Jill Jamieson.

If you would like to learn about the benefits your support provides, you can read testimonials, such as Amanda's story. Here, you can read how you can make a difference directly for Strong Kids.

See you in the Autumn
Our next Tillicum How will not be on your doorstep until this autumn. But don't let that deter you from staying in touch with camp during the spring and summer. Please drop a line, give a call or otherwise get in contact if you have anything you would like to discuss/see/share.

In the meantime, as Woody Guthrie was fond of saying,
Take it easy, but take it,

Doug Saul

I REALLY do need to confirm numbers for the day (for food, tools, indoor space). Will there be five or fifty-five people coming...I don't know. Please reply to me as soon as you are able so I can make the proper arrangements: dsaul@calgary.ymca.ca, 403-673-3858, extension 301.
