Puppy Love

Sweet Pup FaceThe month of February is all about love - and Dog Star Daily, that means puppy love. We understand that urge to have that special someone constantly by your side. In fact, we encourage it. In addition to taking a good puppy class, one of the best things you can do for your pup in terms of socialization and mental stimulation is to bring her with you as many places as you can. Just keep in mind a few guidelines:

Off-leash walks or hikes
Unless your pup is already so well trained that she responds reliably to voice commands, keep her on leash or a long line in open areas. Rock-solid recall is a prerequisite for off-leash outings, and we recommend training the emergency sit as well. Finally, remember those three little words: Scoop your poop.

Outdoor cafes and restaurants
Tantalizing aromas and the excitement of all sorts of new people may be too much for some pups, so sit-down stops at the local cafe should be reserved for only the most well-mannered of the pack. Before even attempting a visit, make sure your pup has an impeccable sit and down. The last thing you want is to find Fifi lap-surfing at the table next to you.

Friends' homes
Even if your friends claim to find Spot as precious and adorable as you do, ask permission before simply showing up with him. Your friend may be pet-sitting her neighbor's parakeet or entertaining other guests who are dog allergic, so checking in beforehand is not only polite, it's essential.
Tugging at Your Heart... and Leash

Dog Scooter If your pup's boundless energy and constant curiosity make her a challenge to walk - not to mention, render her a poor candidate for dates at the coffeehouse or visits to friends' homes - you can still spend quality time together.

Consider the dog-powered scooter. It's not for every dog - yours should be athletic, energetic, and on the young side. But it is a fun and unique way to bond, exercise, and see the world... together.
