Sit, Ubu, Sit. Good Dogma!
"Nothing in life is free" (or NILIF for those in the know) is the formula for a happy human-canine relationship, boiled down to its essence: You control the resources, and your dog must earn them.
That means that every treat, toy, or privilege your dog desires - from the cheese cube in your hand to a belly rub to a romp in the dog park, or a ride in the car - must be preceded with the behavior of your choice. For example, before you deliver his morning kibble, ask your dog for a down. He's dying to go sniff the terrier in the neighbor's yard? First he must politely sit. It may seem harsh or extreme, but NILIF is actually one of the most effective ways to communicate clearly - and kindly - with your dog.
Here's what we mean: Sitting, lying down, staying, etc. are incompatible with obnoxious doggy behavior. So if your pup is sitting, he can't also be jumping all over you while you try to put on his leash. Success! You're happy he's sitting, and your dog's happy he gets to go for a walk.
In addition to ensuring good behavior, NILIF provides your pup with a degree of control. His behaviors have consequences (both positive and negative) and that predictability gives him a sense of security in an otherwise bafflingly human world.

Tell Him What He's Earned, Johnny!
While it's ideal to train using "life rewards" as much as possible (that is, toys, walks, affection, etc.) it's still nice to treat your dog to a bona fide treat once in a while. Zuke's Salmon Mini Naturals are our current favorite. They're healthy, light, and tiny-bite sized, not to mention deliciously stinky, so you can feel great about doling them out. After your dog has earned them, of course.
