Making Spirits Bright
The weather outside is frightful... and winter's only just begun. But, there is a way you and your dog can get out of the house together - and do something that'll make you both feel great: Visit nursing homes, schools, hospitals, or assisted living centers as a Therapy Dog and Handler team. There are programs of all types already in place in almost every area of the country. Some require your dog to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen test, but for many, solid obedience training, plenty of socialization, and a friendly personality (and yes, that means both of you) are the key prerequisites. If you're not familiar with programs in your area, Therapy Dogs International and The Delta Society are good places to start.
And talk about a win-win situation. Your pup gets to experience new and stimulating people and environments, and folks that could use a little comfort and joy in their lives get to experience the overwhelming bliss that is your dog. Plus, not only are you guaranteed that warm-fuzzy feeling volunteering brings, you get to watch your dog put a smile on someone else's face. And that, as they say, is priceless.

Har-Vest is hybrid - a combination no-pull harness and lightweight storage vest/backpack, and it incorporates the best features of both: the comfort and control of a conventional harness with the convenience of a regular dog vest. It's ideal for both extended outings and walks around the block, keeping your hands and pockets free of treats, poop bags, first aid supplies, and anything else you're inclined to bring along.
