By now, your probably already know that at Dog Star Daily we think having a super-handle-able dog is very important.
A dog that not only tolerates all manner of handling but also, actually
enjoys handling is much safer around children, at the vet or groomers, and in emergency situations, because she is less likely to snap or bite out of discomfort or fear.
Halloween is the perfect time to practice full-body handling
in a fun way by dressing your dog. Take it slowly if your dog is new to you, or is in any way uncomfortable with the process. The goal is to gradually desensitize your dog to melting like butter when you touch her anywhere, and we do mean anywhere. Typical no-go-zones for many dogs are ears, mouth, rear end, tail, and hind paws.
To teach your dog to tolerate costumes as well as
this dog we recommend hand-feeding your dog's meals while trading touches for each morsel and eventually adding some socks, pajamas, hats, or costumes to the mix. So if you are going to dress your dog, please do so patiently, in the name of fun training and producing a bomb-proof, confident dog.
Don't be a fright! If your dog isn't into playing dress up, please forgo it this year. You've got plenty of time to start working on making her comfortable for next year's costume if you start training now.
