News That's Music To Our Ears

Dog Relaxing to Music
In her first blog for Dog Star Daily, Lisa Spector explains how she first discovered the calming effect her piano playing had on her canine companions.

We all like music, but can it really change a dog's behavior? It appears so.

As a professional pianist she was intrigued and did some research, and boy are we glad she did! With the help of sound researcher Joshua Leeds and veterinary neurologist Dr. Susan Wagner, she found that different music naturally triggers the relaxation or arousal response in dogs. This tuneful trio created Through A Dog's Ear so dogs and their humans everywhere could benefit from this beautiful musical discovery.

So what is going on with the music, anyway?

"The music of Through A Dog's Ear builds on the groundbreaking psychoacoustic research  of Dr. Alfred Tomatis. Known as the 'Einstein of the ear,' Tomatis discovered the extraordinary powers of sound as a nutrient for the nervous system".

But don't take our word for it, read the testimonials or try it for yourself. The music is absolutely lovely and unlike many other treatments, it has no negative side effects, just harmony for you and your hound!

Many dogs have been successfully calmed from the crazies by this music; it has even helped soothe dogs with separation anxiety.

We recommend first playing the soothing sounds of Music to Calm Your Canine Volume I when you are at home and your dog is relaxed. Set the volume low to keep the mood mellow. Get into a routine of daily chill out time and use the music as the cue to begin. You may start by sitting near your dog, reading or otherwise occupied, but eventually try to leave the room; come and go a bit so your presence doesn't become a necessary component of this tranquil time.

Once your dog is accustomed to the music as being part of his relaxation ritual you may incorporate it into your separation anxiety protocol. Don't rush though, while Through A Dog's Ear will help calm your dog, separation anxiety can take quite a while to subside with treatment.
