Greetings!
Welcome to Dog Star Daily's second Monthly Woof! In this issue we focus on two very important topics that impact all dog lovers: what's inside a dog (genetics, and whether genes alone provide an accurate personality profile) and Breed Specific Legislation. We also give you a glimpse into the life and mind of our blogger Nicole Wilde and invite you to spend A Weekend with the Dunbars. Enjoy!
Breeds In Trouble

Dog in Life Vest
In his recent blog about diversity in dogs, Dr. Ian Dunbar scooped the scandal that is currently rocking the purebred dog fancy in the United Kingdom.

A BBC documentary uncovered how purebred dogs' health is in grave danger across the pond, and most likely the same is true here in the U.S. as well as in Australia.

The show was based on a study by the Imperial College at London University that showed the gene pool for many purebred dogs is far too close for comfort - or health. Without genetic diversity the incidence of inherited genetic health problems such as epilepsy and breathing difficulties will continue to increase and eventually ruin our beloved breeds entirely.

However, all is not lost! Learn how to select a responsible breeder who is doing everything possible to improve their breed of choice.

To teach people more about dog breeding we've recently added a new article by Dr. Dunbar where he outlines his recommendations for responsible breeding practices that strengthen individual breeds and enhance the gene pool rather than erode it.

Perhaps you'd rather find your dog at a shelter than at a breeder. If so, our Training Textbook can help you decide whether to get a mixed breed or purebred dog. We also have a section that will help you decide if a puppy or an adult dog is right for you. Puppies are always cute and fun but the good thing about adopting an adult dog is that what you see is what you get. You needn't do guesswork or interview breeders.

BSL  BS

BSL Blog
It's not only the DNA of dogs that's being compromised, but breed reputation too. Breed Specific Legislation is a very serious topic. All dog lovers should take the time to learn about BSL. Dogs are in danger and, as always, education and training is the only way to combat breed prejudice and persecution. Think your breed is not at risk? Think again.

Blogger Drayton Michaels takes a stab at deconstructing current BSL and calls for community education and cohesiveness to come up with a viable solution to breed bans. Read Drayton's blog Dangerous Dog Diatribe and join the conversation.

A Weekend with the Dunbars

Dogs are turned out of homes each day, either surrendered to shelters or abandoned, because their relationships with humans have failed due to lack of basic training. Effective in-the-home training and behavior modification keeps dogs in their original homes. In animal shelters, canine education increases the dog's suitability for, and likelihood of adoption.

It is with this in mind that Georgia-based Canine Behavioral Clinic and K-9 Coach have joined forces to present A Weekend with the Dunbars. The two-day seminar will focus on how to train dogs in a fun and friendly way. Kelly Gorman Dunbar will present the Open Paw behavior and training program, including the Minimum Mental Health Requirements for kenneled dogs. Dr. Ian Dunbar will talk about "dominance" and raising the bar in dog training.

A Weekend with the Dunbars is scheduled for the 6th & 7th of December 2008 at Zoo Atlanta in the historic Grant Park district of downtown Atlanta.

Register before October 1st to receive the early bird rate. To register or for more information visit the K-9 Coach website.
