Greetings from Dr. Sharon Price, PhD., CN.

Gluten Sensitivity - Why Changing the Diet is Not Enough

By now most of you have heard about gluten sensitivity.  If you've ever been in a health food store you've seen aisles that are devoted to "gluten-free" foods.  Let me say from the outset that if you don't know you're gluten sensitive, you should be checked.  See the information below on how to do that.

Gluten is a polypeptide or a protein found in wheat, rye and barley, and can cross-contaminate oats, as well.  For gluten sensitive individuals, the immune system creates antibodies because it sees these proteins as foreign invaders.  The resulting inflammation will over time damage the "brush-border" (the tiny hairlike projections) of the small and large intestine which are filled with blood and pull nutrients from the foods we eat.  Picture taking a scissors or clippers and gradually shaving this "shag-carpet-like" source of nutrient transfer.  This frank damage to the intestinal tract can result in a more critical clinical condition known as celiac disease.

If you have are gluten sensitive, do the following:

1.  Change the diet by stopping all foods containing gluten.

2.  The damage to the intestinal tract must be addressed with products that promote healing such as glutamine, cat's claw, slippery elm, and others.

3.  Others issues need to addressed which contribute to body burden, such as heavy metal toxicity, yeast and fungus, unbalanced bacteria and hidden viral invaders.

4.  Major detoxifying organs and pathways of elimination must be working properly.

These issues take time to address, but done in a wise manner over a period of one to five years, it is possible at some point to reintroduce gluten back into the diet in moderation, of course.
