Greetings from Dr. Sharon Price, PhD., CN.

Answers to your health and nutrition questions:

Wow, the response was overwhelming.  Thank you so much.  I will address a few of those questions in this and subsequent eNewsletters:

Q.  How do you feel about hair analysis and what is the cost?

A.   Hair Mineral Analysis, also referred to as CPT code 83015 Heavy Toxic Metal Screening, is one of the best and most economical tests that is available today.  I love it!  I've been using this test for 15 years, sometimes singly, sometimes in combination with other tests.  If we know what the levels of minerals are, then we can begin a factual and supportive nutritional program.  However, the real key is proper interpretation of the overall analysis.  For example, elevated calcium levels does not mean that an individual has too much calcium and all supplementation needs to stop.  Other variables need to be considered, and those are discussed with the client as part of the recommended protocol.  The cost from Nutritional Direction for the analysis is $139.00.

Q.  What are the best tests and nutritional paths for children?

A.  Hair Mineral Analysis is most definitely one of the best tests for children.  Depending on the child, generally this is the only test needed.  Children, as a general rule, because their bodies are so unpolluted, can detoxify quite nicely and so heavy metals like cadmium, arsenic, aluminum, lead and mercury show up quite readily on the first hair analysis.  It's important to support not only this detox process, but also to address low mineral concerns that are compromised by heavy metals.

Nutritional paths for children are always guided by what the parents do.  So, in my opinion, it is best for the parent to get an assessment of their own health, follow the recommended "nutritional path" and the child will be more likely to follow.  But generally, 1) your child needs sufficient high quality fat (like Omega 3 fish oil) during their infant and toddler years because the brain is still developing.  2) all children should have some sort of protein and fat for breakfast, not sugared cereal or "toaster tarts".  3) sugars and chemical sweeteners such as Aspartame, NutraSweet, Equal and Splenda should be removed from the diet.  A treat every now and then is fine.
