There is new evidence that fat cells are not just dormant storage depots for calories.
An ariticle in September 2, 2010 ScienceDaily Health News said, "Scientists are reporting new evidence that the fat tissue in those spare tires and lower belly pooches - far from being a dormant storage depot for surplus calories - is an active organ that sends chemical signals to other parts of the body, perhaps increasing the risk of heart attacks, cancer, and other diseases."
It was once thought that fat cells were simply holding areas for surplus calories. Recent studies show that fat cells can secrete certain hormones and other substances which are involved in appetite control and blood sugar stabilization. There are reports of twenty new hormones and other chemical messengers being identified in these active organ fat cells.
The take-away from this new research would indicate that increased fat cells can contribute to hormonal imbalance increasing the liklihood of heart attacks and cancer.
Increased fat cells can also cause dis-eases such as
- premenstrual syndrome
- polycystic ovarian syndrome
- depression
- diabetes
- hypoglycemia
- over/underactive thyroid and adrenals
- cervical dysplasia
- erectile dysfunction
- benign prostatic hypertrophy
