Join Us in San Diego on
October 29, 2009 for the Trustee to Trustee FORUM

Plans are underway for a great two day program for MTA Patrons and Trustees in San Diego this fall.

On October 29, 2009 we will hold a Trustee Forum at the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park.

 Trustee to Trustee Forum:
Creative Initiatives In Challenging Times

Join your fellow trustees and museum directors at a timely forum to share knowledge, network, and learn from other museums and their boards. In these challenging times we all need to learn from other trustees how they are dealing with issues such as fundraising in a challenging economy, how to downsize responsibly and still fulfill our museums mission, and how working together through partnerships can strengthen all museums.

MTA President Jim McCreightNews from the American Association of Museums

Congratulations, museum advocates! Thanks to your efforts, the Coburn/McCain amendment (S. Amdt. 2372) - which would have prohibited ANY funding from the Transportation Appropriations bill (H.R. 3288) from going to ANY museum - was defeated on the Senate floor on September 16, 2009.  The amendment, which states, "None of the funds made available by this Act may be used for a museum," was rejected by a vote of 41-57!

An additional amendment offered by Senators Tom Coburn (R-OK) and John McCain (R-AZ) - (S. Amdt. 2371) which would have waived a requirement that states set aside 10% of their overall funding for Transportation Enhancements (including historic preservation and museums, among other programs) - was also defeated by a vote of 39-59. Sen. Coburn had initially offered another amendment
(S. Amdt. 2370) that would have prohibited funding from going to transportation museums and other TE projects, but later withdrew it.

Since 1992, the Transportation Enhancement Program has provided at least $110.6 million to support museums.

During Senate floor debate, Senator Coburn repeatedly referred to museums as "low-priority" entities that did not deserve federal transportation funds in these difficult economic times.

In response, Senators Tom Carper (D-DE) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA) defended Transportation Enhancement (TE) projects and highlighted their value to communities.

Sen. Carper highlighted the impact of TE funds on Wilmington, DE where they are being used to revitalize the waterfront district, including a science and trail center that will engage and educate thousands.

Sen. Boxer noted that TE programs and projects, "put hundreds of thousands of Americans to work" and "improve the quality of life for millions of Americans."

"This is a great victory for the museum field and I want to thank each and every advocate who contacted their Senators to urge a No vote on these amendments," said AAM President Ford W. Bell. "To have Senators Barbara Boxer and Tom Carper speak on the Senate floor about the many ways in which museums create jobs, revitalize communities, and preserve our national heritage is very heartening.  But the fact that these amendments continue to come up and are supported by more than a third of the Senate reflects that we need to strengthen our field-wide advocacy efforts."

Jim McCreight, MTA President, said MTA has been an active participant in the AAM Advocacy program and has represented the views of museum Trustees on several issues of interest before the Congress.
Results from the MTA Poll

MTA recently polled its members by email and here are the results:

Question 1: Does your board have term limits for board members?

  YES   83%     NO   17%

MTA has found that most museums have term limits for board members and require at least 1 year off the board before coming back on the board.

Question 2: If asked to continue on your museum board for another term would you?

  YES   92%    NO    8%

This indicates a vast majority of board members value their board experience.

Question 3: Does your board do annual Board and Director performance reviews?

  YES   67%    NO   33%

MTA encourages museums to do annual reviews and provides an excellent tool for accomplishing this task in our Guidebook: The Leadership Partnership.

Question 4: Would your museum accept an exhibit provided by and sponsored by a corporation?

   YES  42%    NO   58%

In these difficult financial times museums are divided on the question of exhibits provided by a corporation and then funded by the corporation. If the museum curator is not involved at all in the exhibit it raises ethical questions that the board needs to address.

Question 5: Does your board require a minimum annual donation to serve on the board?

 YES   67%    NO   33%

Requiring your board members to make a financial contribution, even if relatively small gives them a vested interest in the museum and in many cases foundations expect 100% participation by boards.

Watch for the next Zoomerang email poll and take a few minutes to answer the questions.
