MTA Partners with AAM on Museums Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C.
MTA is a Partnering Organization with AAM on the program scheduled for February 23-24, 2009 in Washington, DC. We urge MTA members who can travel to Washington and meet with their congressional representatives to discuss continued federal support for museums to please assist AAM in this program.
AAM is pleased to invite museum professionals and advocates from around the country to Washington, DC on February 23-24, 2009 for Museums Advocacy Day. During the two-day program, participants will be briefed on AAM's legislative agenda and will learn how to effectively communicate the value of museums to public policy makers. The second day will consist of visits to Capitol Hill where advocates will make their case to Congress.
In 2009, a new Congress and a new administration will begin working on a wide range of issues, including funding for museum programs and the reauthorization of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). We need to make our voices heard!
"There could not be a more critical time for museum advocates to make their case on Capitol Hill," said AAM President Ford Bell. "With so much at stake, we need to effectively communicate the value of museums to our elected officials."

Mergers and Acquisitions: Museum Style
In the news lately have been stories of mergers and acquisitions of museums by museums with the goal of consolidating administrative, bookkeeping, information technology and exhibit preparation staff to save money.
An example is the Governor of Washington's proposal to merge the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma and the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane. The Governor's office proposes the two museum boards be combined in one board. The "savings" are projected at $500,000 a year.
The Governor also proposes cutting support funds for the museums by $3.8 million. Directors of both museums are cool to the merger idea and believe cutting $3.8 million in State support would leave both museums "mortally wounded".
In Portland, Oregon the Museum of Contemporary Craft finds itself in a "dire cash-flow" position after moving to a new location and failing to meet its fundraising goals and has approached the Pacific Northwest College of Art about a merger. The College is interested if the Museum expands its mission to include design.
Most "mergers" as in the corporate world result in lay-offs of duplicate personnel but if overall savings result with no loss of mission mergers can benefit the community.
What do you think of this trend? Are there similar events happening in your city or state?
Let us know so we can share the news with other trustees.

YVES SAINT LAURENT
November 1, 2008 - April 5, 2009
In the 1960s Yves Saint Laurent made an indelible mark on fashion with clothing emblematic of the new modernity. Yves Saint Laurent, organized by FAMSF and The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent, explores the designs that made Saint Laurent famous, and his inspirations drawn from art, theatre, history, literature, and nature. This exhibition contains nearly 130 accessorized garments and sketches illustrating the lines, colors, and fundamentals of Saint Laurent's work. This is the only U.S. venue.

JOURNEYS EAST Isabella Stewart Gardner and Asia February 21 - May 31, 2009
Journeys East considers Isabella Gardner's continuing dialogue with Asia, from her trips to the Near and Far East, to the formation of a personal museum where Asian art played a significant role. Later in life, her close friendship with Okakura Kakuzo initiated a new phase of collecting Asian art and led to a rearrangement of the museum. The exhibition explores the complex interaction of travel, collecting, and museum formation. On display will be Gardner's travel albums and Asian objects ranging from Japanese screens to a monumental bronze Buddha, Indian jewelry to Chinese snuff bottles.
The exhibition has been made possible by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Additional support has been provided by the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.
A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition (available spring 2009).
