Greetings!

Welcome to the latest news from the Museum Trustee Association, The Network for Informing, Advising and Inspiring Museum Trustees.  We want to share our monthly newsletter with all your museum trustees. If we don't have a current roster for your institution, please email it to Donna McQuery at office@mta-hq.org .   MTA keeps these names and email addresses confidential of course.
MTA President Jim McCreightHow Can You Increase A Contribution To Your Museum By 20% to 40%?

We all know 2009 will be a challenging year for our fundraising efforts on behalf of our museums. As board members we need to find creative approaches to fundraising. Here is an idea which may result in larger contributions.

Many donors who are over the age of 70 ½ are not aware that a special tax rule adopted as a part of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 on October 3, 2008 allows those over 70 ½ to make charitable contributions directly from their IRA or Roth IRA accounts, up to $100,000 a year, to your museum tax-free! This rule applies to contributions made through December 31, 2009.

As you know if a donor takes a withdrawal from their IRA they must declare this withdrawal as a part of their gross income that year and in most cases pay income tax. By using a tax-free rollover and possibly saving income tax liabilities of 20% to 40% donors can give more than they could from after-tax donations!

Of course each individual situation is unique and donors should consult their tax advisors to make sure they comply with the IRS rules. But by acquainting your older donors with this option you benefit your donor and hopefully your museum. You may find donations from places you least expected. In the months ahead we will continue to offer new ideas on fundraising which we hope you will share with your board and museum staff.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

MTA member, the Metropolitan Museum of Art
(www.metmuseum.org) in New York City, has announced that Thomas P. Campbell - an accomplished curator with a specialty in European tapestry who has worked at the Museum since 1995 - has been elected its next Director and CEO, succeeding Philippe de Montebello, who announced in January his intention to retire from the Metropolitan Museum at the end of this year.

Mr. Campbell, who organized the groundbreaking and widely acclaimed exhibitions Tapestry in the Renaissance: Art and Magnificence (2002) and Tapestry in the Baroque: Threads of Splendor (2007), is currently Curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts as well as Supervising Curator of the Museum's Antonio Ratti Textile Center. He was elected by the Board of Trustees and will assume the directorship of the Metropolitan Museum on January 1, 2009.

MTA Partners with AAM on Museums Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C.

MTA is a Partnering Organization with AAM on the program scheduled for February 23-24, 2009 in Washington, DC. We urge MTA members who can travel to Washington and meet with their congressional representatives to discuss continued federal support for museums to please assist AAM in this program.

AAM is pleased to invite museum professionals and advocates from around the country to Washington, DC on February 23-24, 2009 for Museums Advocacy Day.   During the two-day program, participants will be briefed on AAM's legislative agenda and will learn how to effectively communicate the value of museums to public policy makers.  The second day will consist of visits to Capitol Hill where advocates will make their case to Congress.

In 2009, a new Congress and a new administration will begin working on a wide range of issues, including funding for museum programs and the reauthorization of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).  We need to make our voices heard!

"There could not be a more critical time for museum advocates to make their case on Capitol Hill," said AAM President Ford Bell.  "With so much at stake, we need to effectively communicate the value of museums to our elected officials."

Butterfly Garden - Walk among the free-flying residents of this warm conservatory filled with exotic plants. Overlooking the Charles River, this tropical oasis offers a wonderful opportunity to get close to a variety of living butterflies from New England and across the globe. Upon entering the garden, you'll begin to notice the details - size, color pattern, wing shape-that make each species unique. Printed guides with photographs will help you identify the butterflies and moths you see, while labels interspersed among the exotic foliage will highlight key behaviors to watch for, such as feeding, courting, and basking.
