Systematic Outsourcing: A New Model for Museum Management in Challenging TImes
The recent precipitous upheaval in the financial markets is the latest and perhaps most serious challenge to museums in recent years.
Institutions are facing uncertainty over the future of their corporate, private, and municipal support. Moreover, many museums are experiencing the threat of higher interest costs from turbulence in the bond markets. Now more than ever, museum directors and trustees have an even greater responsibility in helping to prioritize and allocate their institutions' current and anticipated resources not only for short-term operating needs, but also for improving operating efficiencies, expanding physical plant requirements, updating conservation standards, making future acquisitions, and generating temporary and traveling exhibits.
Current Economic Environment - Museum directors and trustees regularly evaluate their institutions on a strategic level as a means to rationalize their curatorial and programmatic responsibilities to the public with the limitations of their current and anticipated resources. In the current economic climate, however, there is a growing imperative for museum leaders to expand those strategic discussions into deeper, more tactical re-examinations of their collections and physical assets as well as their long-standing, vertically integrated museum management model, emanating from the 19th century, in which directors are expected to have intimate knowledge of and ultimate authority over every museum function, and every discipline is staffed with multiple full-time professionals.
Systematic Outsourcing: A New Business Model for Museums - During a typical strategic re-assessment, no "given" is sacrosanct, so this may be the right time for museum boards to re-consider long-held management practices and evaluate the benefits of systematic outsourcing as a contemporary model for supporting their mission and vision, maintaining the integrity of their collections, and conserving their human and financial resources. On a daily basis, outsourced professionals research, plan, and execute solutions to many of the museum world's most difficult tasks. The frequency and complexity of their specialized experiences make them uniquely qualified resources in the industry to help museums think through how they can manage their operations and collections more effectively.
Here are some questions that might stimulate an institution to consider outsourcing as a mechanism to manage its resources more effectively:
· Which positions/functions are specific to the institution? Which ones are more generic? · Which positions require full-time, year-long compensation? Can job functions be spread across fewer workers? · What are the efficiencies/economies of scale that could result from outsourcing? · What is the best and highest use of the institution's real estate portfolio? Could storage or workroom expenses be managed more effectively?
How these and many other questions are answered could help re-direct an institution's long-term execution strategies and solutions, protect its collections, realize its obligations to their respective communities, and meet its operational bottom-line goals and objectives.

Since 1842, America's oldest public art museum. Hartford art patron Daniel Wadsworth (1771-1848) founded the Wadsworth Atheneum to share the wonders of art with the public. In the mid-nineteenth century, average citizens had little if no exposure to fine art, antiquities, or beautiful objects. Only the very wealthy purchased paintings or decorative arts, and then only for their own enjoyment. Thus, Wadsworth's generous gesture was an exciting turn of events that raised the cultural fortunes of an entire community.
