Ahhh...Spring in lovely Bend, Oregon. Hot sunshine followed by snow, a little rain and perhaps a bit of hail. If you like to play outside, spring is a time of what my husband, Andy, and I like to call recreational cataplexy.
It's a condition commonly found in Bendites in May. Characterized by waking up every morning, regardless of the weather, one is paralyzed by the complete loss of any ability to decide which outdoor activity would be most fun. My own thoughts go something like this:
"Yawn...nice sunshine! Wonder if it will rain or snow this afternoon? Should I get on my skis, hike up something and get a few turns in some fresh powder (I'm sure it snowed a couple inches somewhere last night). Too much work- maybe go climbing. Yeah, Smith Rock is always warm. I could use some sun. Mmmm...sunshine. The trails are perfect right now though. And I wouldn't have to drive. Mountain biking sounds fun! I haven't checked on the plants along the river lately, maybe I'll just go jogging on the river trail. But it's perfect for road biking right now. Haven't been on my cross bike in months..."
Of course, all this outdoorsy ADHD behavior comes with a great deal of soreness for those of us over 30. This year, my shoulder complains a lot. Every night, I rub a little Sore Muscle Rub in for some relief. The icy-hot tingle takes the edge off the pain and the arnica and St. John's Wort lessen the stiffness and swelling.
