| From the StillPointe Staff | September 1, 2010 |
Dear Patients and Friends:
Are you and your family ready for fall? You can feel it in the air already. Fall means "back to school" and the stress of adapting to new activities and schedules. It is also a a great time to reassess your health goals and we are here to help you feel good during the upcoming change of seasons.
September for me means a trip to South Africa. I'm excited to have the opportunity to travel from Capetown to Port Elizabeth from September 13-27, where my son, Tim, is doing a study abroad at Nelson Mandela University. Dr. Jen Bestick will be available for Chiropractic care, and the staff came up with some "While the Boss is Away" Specials! From the 13th through the 27th, receive $25.00 off an initial EDS visit, $15.00 off a one-hour massage, and $10.00 off a follow-up EDS visit.
We are also excited to present a class, scheduled for September 30th, on "Detoxification," a body-cleansing informational program that can help break the cycle of illness, aches and pains, fatigue and everything inbetween. We have had many requests for information on how to safely "detox and cleanse," so we developed a program. See details in the class listing in the sidebar to the left. You will also find information on three classes we are offering through the Sartell-St. Stephen Community Ed program, including: Boot Camp, Gluten-Free 101 and a Stress and Breath workshop.
I also wanted to thank you for attending our 6th Annual Back-to-School Screening event that was held in early August. The scoliosis and spine screenings for kids, along with backpack checks for fit and weight recommendations, are an important part of preparing to learn. Children respond well to chiropractic treatment. If they feel better, they will be healthier and more focused as they tackle the new school year.
We are continuing our systems updates, including our billing processes and communication vehicles. This is always a challenge but we are making progress. You are starting to see new statements so please feel free to call us with any questions you might have. Plus we are gearing up to launch a new website that will include increased educational resources and information related to Chiropractic healthcare. You will be invited to become a "member" (free) which will allow you to access additional information and receive a monthly newsletter.
As always, thanks for choosing StillPointe for your health. We truly value you and feel honored to be your clinic of choice and appreciate your referrals! If you have any questions on our products, services or upcoming events, please visit our website or contact us. Have a healthy September. I'll post pictures from South Africa on Facebook, so please join us on the StillPointe Natural Health page.
Yours in Health, Dr. Susan Saetre and the StillPointe Staff

"Packing a Powerful Kid-Friendly Lunch" | |
From: The Natural News Service, a public information program provided by Northwestern Health Sciences University.
Parents know that one of the biggest challenges in raising kids is getting them to eat right. With busier-than-ever schedules and hurried mornings, many parents choose the convenience of school lunches. But do you really know what your kids are eating?
Amrit Devgun, ND, a naturopathic practitioner at Northwestern Health Sciences University's Natural Care Center at Woodwinds in Woodbury, Minnesota, says, "The problem is that families today are too busy and they don't have time to provide quality nutrition for their kids." Taking the easy route in the morning may save you some time, but can lead to trouble for your kids down the road.
According to Devgun, kids who eat a healthy, balanced diet have a lower risk overall of chronic disease. Deficiencies in childhood often take a lifetime to show up. Other benefits of eating well include: stronger bones; stronger immune system; higher levels of concentration and focus; less moodiness; healthy weight and body mass index; and positive body image.
With after-school and evening activities creeping into the dinner hour, providing a healthy lunch is more important than ever, says Devgun. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 28 million lunches are served each day at U.S. schools, at a cost of $8 billion per year. Yet, childhood obesity and childhood diabetes are on the rise. School lunches often don't measure up, says Devgun. "Find out what's happening at your child's school. Check the lunch menu. Are kids allowed to have a water bottle at their desk? Is soda available? Is there a scheduled snack time?" Devgun joined the nutrition task force at her daughter's school, where she stressed the value of offering fresh vegetables and fruits for lunch. Here are some additional suggestions:
- Make sure your child has plenty of water. Reduce or eliminate juice drinks.
- Read labels, and know what you are reading. Sugars and sugar substitutes are listed in many forms. It's only whole-grain if the label says "100 percent" whole- grain.
- Check serving sizes: on many pre-packaged lunch foods, half the package is one serving.
- Reduce or eliminate processed foods. Try filling your grocery cart with 70 percent fresh.
- Offer a healthy breakfast, consisting of a whole-grain cereal or bread paired with protein. Pack a lunch from home when possible. The high-fat, high-sugar choices often found on school lunch menus can induce a mid-afternoon slump.
- Shop wisely. Choose low-sugar varieties in products such as ketchup, syrup, cereal and granola bars; whole-grain breads and crackers (even frozen waffles come in whole-grain varieties); and serve fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible.
- Get back to basics: According to Devgun, kids' tastes have changed in adaptation to the foods that are available. When you wean them from sugar and fat, your child's palate will eventually adjust and they will no longer crave those foods.
- Think outside the lunch box, Lunch doesn't have to be a sandwich and an apple. Be creative. String cheese, and ham or turkey cut into "sticks" with a piece of fruit is a great lunch.
For additional resources, visit http://www.nwhealth.edu/nns - a website focusing on natural approaches to health and wellness hosted by Northwestern Health Sciences University. We also have a great hand-out at StillPointe with lots of recipes and ideas for "kid-healthy and friendly" foods, put together by SarahErin Palmer. Stop by the front desk and pick one up. |

Featured "Essential Oil" of the Month - Thieves |
Each month we will be selecting an essential oil to feature, providing information on how that specific oil can be used and the benefits. Plus we will have sample size bottles available for purchase. This will provide you with a way to try the different essential oils at a reasonable price - just $5.00 - and see how they work for you.
The essential oil we will be featuring during the month of September is "Thieves." It is a blend of oils created from research about four thieves during the 15th-century plague who used cloves, rosemary and other aromatics to protect themselves while robbing plague victims. Thieves is a proprietary blend of pure essential oils tested at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. It was found to have a 99.96 percent effective rate against airborne bacteria. It is great for viruses as well and can be diluted and used as a cleaner and disinfectant. Spraying down surface areas and daily cleaning is helpful for cold and flu prevention.
The Thieves Oil product line includes: a household cleanser, toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss, lozenges and spray. And an immune support supplement, InnerDefense.
A good practice when trying a new oil is to dilute it and try it in a small area first. More detailed information on this blend and how to use this oil will be provided at the time of purchase. |
