Fall Corn
Dear Patients and Friends:
"A Mile of Laughs ... and Thankfulness."
Some days when I'm on my way to work, thinking of the long "to do" list and all of the things that need to be done, I feel anxiety in my chest and stomach, and muscles start tightening. Life seems overwhelming and it is only the beginning of the day! Since taking a series of classes on breath work and "laughter yoga" last year, I've started to "laugh for a mile." When I hit the junction of highway 10 and 15, I start belly laughing. This is harder than it seems and sometimes it feels a bit crazy, especially when I get strange looks from other drivers - but it is good for your health.
A growing body of research suggests laughing, no matter what causes it, can boost your immune system, ease muscle tension and generally make you feel better.  It is a major weapon against stress and causes your brain to release endorphins, similar to exercise (it is also great for tightening those ab muscles).  Laughter therapy classes and laughter yoga have become common in health centers and hospitals all over the world as the numerous health benefits are being recognized. During this "laughter trek,'" I also list all the things for which I am thankful. This list is also a mile long, and certainly includes all of you - wonderful people who choose StillPointe for your health and wellness.
This is the month of thanksgiving, so join me in a mile of laughter, keep your family and friends close and gratitude in your heart.
As always, I really appreciate that you choose StillPointe, and welcome any comments or suggestions on how we can best serve you and your family.

In good health,
Dr. Susan Saetre and the StillPointe Staff

TOPIC OF THE MONTH:   FIBROMYALGIA

PRODUCTS OF THE MONTH.
TOPIC OF THE MONTH:
"FIBROMYALGIA"
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by a combination of widespread pain in the muscles, tendons, ligaments, fatigue, and multiple tender points on the body.
Tender points are specific areas that are painful or tender when pressure is applied, particularly in the neck, shoulders, upper back, upper chest, elbows, low back, hips, and thighs.  The cause of this syndrome is not known, and it is often misdiagnosed. According to the American College of Rheumatology, fibromyalgia affects 3 to 6 million people in the United States, and is more common in women, especially between the ages of 30 and 50. (Clinical Rheumatology, 7-19-06)
People with fibromyalgia may also experience other symptoms and conditions, such as sleep disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, TMJ disorders, anxiety, depression, restless legs syndrome, numbness or tingling, poor concentration, and heightened sensitivity to odors, noises, bright lights and touch.
At StillPointe, we use a multifaceted approach to our patients with this disorder:
Chiropractic adjustments often help alleviate pain, reduce nerve compression, headaches and jaw pain. Massage is a gentle way to work on affected muscles, tender points and restless legs.  Essential oils also help alleviate symptoms and stress. Exercise is very important, and we will help you find types of movements that are right for you. Electrodermal screening (EDS) is often used to identify Fibromyalgia triggers and help determine which nutritional supplements will benefit you the most. The most common include:
Fibroplex/ Fibroplex Plus (capsules or powder) is designed for people with muscle tenderness and discomfort. It contains many anti-inflammatory nutrients such as vitamin C, magnesium, B6, B12, glutamine and malic acid.
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is thought to work by increasing levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. There is preliminary evidence that it may reduce the number of tender points in people with fibromyalgia, possibly by affecting pain-modulating systems in the brainstem.
