Tails From The Squad
December 2010

Greetings!

It's Adopt a Senior Month & Dawg Squad Bets the Pups Will Go All In

Dawg Squad wants to thank West LA Poker for throwing a fun casino party for Molly and her puppies.  Dawg Squad supporters mingled with some really good poker players for a fun afternoon of pushing and calling and yelling BLACKJACK!   A special shout out goes to Nick who taught us rookies how to play craps.  Check out the latest pictures of the pups

And make sure to read about Ruth, our December Senior!

Carole and GusA MESSAGE FROM

OUR FOUNDER

2010 has been quite a roller coaster ride.  The economy has affected everyone but we've been really lucky and we have you all to thank for keeping The Squad going.

Our special needs dogs and our Parvo puppies all got the care they needed.  Some of you reached the end of your rope with behavior problems but we worked together and we've got happy dogs and happy adopters.  It's what it's all about...working together to help those who deserve a second chance.  It's not just one person....it's a team effort.   From those of you stopping traffic to grab a scared dog, to our volunteers who show up every Saturday to help with our available dogs, to our fosters who give up going out in the evening to stay home with the dogs in their care, to YOU...the wonderful people who have adopted and loved and given the homeless a family to call their own.

In fact, we placed over 100 dogs in 2010 and your emails and pictures of "happily ever after" make us all smile and sometimes cry with happiness!

It was a great year!  Have a wonderful holiday and stay safe and well.    Here's to a fabulous 2011!

With affection and gratitude,

Carole Pearson

SHALOM'S PICS

If you read our posts on Facebook, you know one of our puppies ate the remote for our DVD.  So we haven't watched very many movies. But we found this really great show onTV call The Haunted.

This show is about people who move into houses and it turns out that there is a ghost in the house!  Of course, the people think that they are going crazy or imagining things but their dogs and cats KNOW that there is a ghost.  Sometimes the animal won't go in a certain room and there was this one Labrador who stopped going in the house at all!

Most of the time the ghost is really nice and just lonely and wants someone to talk to.  But there was this one ghost that was very scarey and the Maltese puppy really wanted it out of the house.  Finally the people called in some psychic investigators and they eventually got the ghost to leave the house and the Maltese puppy was happy again.

Mom says that dogs and cats have never been told that there is no such thing as ghosts so they can probably see them better than humans.  Do YOU believe in ghosts?

I like this show.  So I'm giving it four paws up!

Peace Out,
Shalom

DECEMBER IS SENIOR'S MONTH

Our trainer Ann Masters sent this wonderful story for us to share with you

Soooooooooooo, I was just at the vet with Rocky and a young married couple
walked in with an old yellow lab. They approached the counter and the wife
said, "My husband called earlier this morning. We have an appointment at
4:00 for our dog, Dee Dee."

The woman behind the counter nodded, grabbed some forms and handed them to the couple. "Just have a seat and fill these out," she said, smiling. "Let me know if you have any questions."

The couple sat down and, as the husband began filling out the paperwork, another client's puppy-a fuzzily-adorable, reddish-brown poodle mix of some sort-started sniffing at Dee Dee, tail wagging in a fury. The puppy offered a play bow and, when he got no response from his new acquaintance, started barking madly at Dee Dee. The pup's mother apologized.

"Sorry, he's an energetic little boy-thinks every dog was born to play with him."

Dee Dee's mom laughed and smiled. "It's okay. Dee Dee's an old woman. She'sprobably not much up for playing."

"She looks like a sweetheart," the puppy's mom commented. "How old
is she?"

"About eight," Dee Dee's mom answered, "but we can't be sure. We just adopted her today."

An older dog in need of rescue found a loving home today. That's too rare, and it felt like such a gift to see (a gift too good not to share).

BENEFITS OF ADOPTING A CANINE SENIOR CITIZEN

These are just a few of the many beneefits of adopting a senior dog:
  • Older dogs are already trained so you don't have to deal with all the WORK that goes along with training a puppy or younger dog, including accidents in the house, frequent trips outside, regimented schedule, etc.
  • They are usually calmer and more settled than younger dogs. That doesn't mean to imply they wouldn't want to play and go for walks.
  • There are less surprises with an older dog, i.e., what you see is what you get in terms of size, coat and personality. It's kind of a sure thing.
  • Whoever said you can't teach an old dog new tricks? You can still teach your older dog the rules of your house. In fact, because they're more mature they may pay attention and not be as easily distracted.
  • They are grateful. Older dogs have usually seen the harsher side of life. Ask anyone who's adopted a rescue, specifically an older rescue. It's hard to describe but, well...they're grateful! Show them gentleness and kindness and you can see the love and appreciation in their eyes.
