BernieDEAR BERNIE

My dog is going on 12 and his personality has totally changed.  I realize he's getting old but he forgets to go outside to go potty, he paces constantly and well, he just doesn't seem very happy.  It makes ME very sad.  Do you have any advice how I can make him happier?

Concerned in Culver City

Dear Concerned,

Just like people, dogs can "lose it" as they get older.  My friend Gus is getting older and we were all scared for him for awhile.  He wouldn't sleep at night, he wandered around aimlessly, wouldn't even take treats and just acted like he was lost.  He looked so sad all the time it made Mom cry.

One night he jumped through the kitchen window to get outside (just the screen, not the glass).  Good thing he jumped behind our gate, not in the front yard!

Mom took him to the vet and he has what is known as Canine Cognitive Dysfunction.  It's kinda like doggie Alzheimer's.  Gus had to go on special food and he takes a pill every night.  And Mom makes him get up and go outside for at least 1/2 hour before bed time so he can get some exercise and go potty.  It's almost like having a puppy again and it's a lot of work but man...Gussie has been here FOREVER so me and Mom are being extra patient.

So you should take your dog to your vet right away and get him examined right away.  He might not even have CCD...it might be something different but he reallly should go to the vet asap!

Be patient and loving,

Bernie
