Tails From The Squad
February 2010

Greetings!

Name Those Puppies and Win!

Rottweiler puppyWe need inspiration so put on your thinking caps!

The Dawg Squad just rescued a litter of 5 week old Rottweiler mix puppies.  After 1200+ rescues, we're running out of ideas so we need your help to name this fuzzy family. There are 3 boys and 3 girls.

Pick a theme - be clever, be silly, go for the long shot.  Visit the puppy page on our website to see a video of the litter.

The winner will receive a gift certificate to Club Fido, a deluxe boarding facility in West Los Angeles.   Runner up will get a Dawg Squad t-shirt (they're super-cute).

Email your entries to dawgsquad@rocketmail.com by February 15th.
The winner will be announced in next month's newsletter.
Dear BernieWHY, MOM, WHY?!

Bernie I truly believe that Mom has gone overboard this time.  Why do we have SIX puppies at our house?  WHY?  Bernie, they make funny noises and they squeak and they run all over my patio area and they think that they can play with MY toys and, well, I just don't get it.

My friend Lara comes over at lunch to play with them and feed them and do I get anything?  NO!  Bernie, we have to do something!

Help,
Pat

Dear Pat,

I hear ya brother!  They eat in my room and they are so messy.  On the other hand, since their food goes flying, I do get some extra treats if I'm very quick about it.   And they have to eat 3 times a day - you don't (I was going to mention something about your waistline...aerobics Pat, aerobics!)

They are almost crate trained and they do sleep all night so they aren't as naughty as some of the puppies we have had here.   I do wish they would get some names though.  Mom yelling "hey you guys get over here" is confusing.  I think she's talking to us.

We can do this Pat.   We can!   Just a few more weeks and they'll all get adopted and we'll have some peace and quiet and things will be back to normal.   Maybe.  Unless she finds another litter that needs our help.

Yours in frustration,
Bernie

4 PAWS UP FOR
THE BLIND SIDE

It's been a pretty jam-packed month trying to watch all of the potential Oscar contenders before the big event.  Mom doesn't like to admit this publicly but...we do embrace a family tradition of watching the Oscars and, dare I say it, the red carpet parade! So, when Sondra Bullock won a Golden Globe for best actress we thought we'd better add the Blind Side to our movie roster.

Even though there weren't any dogs in the movie and it was seemingly about football (I'm a girlie-girl so that topic is usually not in my top 20) we gave it a peek. I have to say we weren't disappointed!

The Blind Side is about this woman and her family who take in this stray kid. It's true! People rescue people too, not just dogs. Anyway, even though their friends and community are racist and don't support their decision, they take this quiet, giant of a kid from the projects into their family. Turns out he has talent and turns into a pretty amazing athlete. With the help of their love, patience and guidance he gains the self-confidence to become a world-class football star.

Not only is the Blind Side based on a true story but it touches on a few important topics like love - something I know about thanks to my patient Mom (I have been known to be a little challenging in my day), second chances (something we in the rescue world all know all about) and looking beyond appearances (being a Rottweiler I know something about this topic too).

Sondra Bullock's performance was understated but spot-on and Quinton Aaron was so disarmingly humble he can hang with my pack anytime!

So if you want to see something with a little heart, go see Blind Side. It's one of those gentle, family value movies you don't see that often.

Peace out!
Shalom

KenzoSUCCESS STORY

Kenzo was a favorite amongst our volunteers and the dogs.  He was just one happy-go-lucky puppy who got a fabulous home.   Kenzo's adopter sent us this picture and says:

"John and I wanted to send you a picture of us with Kenzo on our first hike up to the Griffith Park Observatory.  He had a great time and he is doing great! We are having a wonderful time with him.

Take care,
Denise"\
