Tails From The Squad
December 2009

Greetings!

Happy Holidays from the Dawg Squad! It is our favorite time of the year. While you are enjoying the festivities, excitement and never-ending stream of friends -- don't forget to keep those decorations and poinsettias out of reach. If your dogs are anything like our Dawgs, they can't resist the allure of those fragile and poisonous decorations.

New this month - Welcome dog trainer extraordinaire, Michael Chill with his first contribution to the Squad, upcoming Santa Paws photo event and Dawg Squad in the News.

And finally, The Dawg Squad needs Foster Homes. See below for more information.
Dear BernieHOLIDAY VISITOR CONUNDRUM

Dear Bernie,

I'm getting very nervous.  There's talk in the house about a fat man with a bunch of wild animals landing on our house at the end of the month and coming down our chimney!

Should I go into guard dog mode?

5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ADOPTING A RESCUE DOG

BY Michael Chill

People adopt rescue dogs for a variety of reasons, one of which is the ability to "know what you are getting." Knowing if the dog is housebroken, not destructive, or good with kids is one of the benefits of adopting an adult dog, and an honest assessment of the dog's training, behavior, and temperament is very important in deciding which dog is right for you.

Be aware that there are some behaviors that are simply not possible to assess in a kennel or foster environment and that there are other behavior problems that may only show up after a period of time in the new home.

HELP!
FOSTER HOMES NEEDED

'Tis the season for giving so why not give a dog in need a second chance at life by providing a temporary home as they transition to a new life.

As you may not know, we try to place all of our dogs in foster homes. This is not always possible as the number of dogs far exceed the available homes. When we don't have enough foster homes the only other option is to place the dogs in kennels. While they are no longer in jeopardy, this is not the same as the love and nurturing a foster home can provide.

Right now, the Dawg Squad is in desperate need for foster homes. We take care of all the expenses. All you need to do is provide the safe, secure and loving environment.

If you are interested, we would love to talk to you. Email dawgsquad@rocketmail.com or visit our website for more information
DAWG SQUAD IN THE NEWS

Carole Pearson, founder of the Dawg Squad speaks out against recent comments by Chris Rock and Jay Leno.  The celebrities offended dog lovers and animal rights groups alike with their controversial comments about Michael Vick.

An excerpt from the Los Angeles Times article:

The Dawg Squad and other like-minded rescue groups "fight every day to make people sensitive to the plight of pit bulls and bully breeds in general," Pearson continued.  But it's an uphill battle to make the general public understand that members of this often-demonized breed are typically gentle and affectionate by nature and only become fighters through human interference, she added -- and comments like Rock's and Leno's certainly aren't helping matters.

"These dogs are so in-tune to people that they will do anything their person asks ... even fight," Pearson said. "It's been said before and I'll say it again ... the problem is not pit bulls.  It's the people who have them and treat them as if they were not 'real dogs,' just items for disposal."

 VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
  Lara_Agnes
For the past 7 years, Lara has been taking care of litters of puppies and dogs with medical issues.  With her EMT background, she is the perfect foster when we find a dog that just needs some special TLC.

So it really didn't surprise us when Lara decided that she just had to adopt Agnes from the Baldwin Park Shelter.

Agnes is a 13 year old chihuahua, blind, diabetic (insulin twice a day) and totally incontinent.  The perfect dog for our big hearted volunteer.  And apparently...she tastes really good too!

Thank you Lara....
