Tails From The Squad
August 2009

Greetings!

We're well into August and the sweltering dog days of summer! Time for you and your pooch to enjoy the beautiful weather with a trip to the beach or a long hike. We're blessed to have both options in Southern California. Take plenty of water for both of you - we recommend a lightweight travel bowl for your canine. And remember, light-haired dogs can burn their sensitive skin too so if your dog has a pink nose - a drop of sunscreen will keep him/her from burning.

This month's edition presents The Name Game from our resident dog trainer Ann Masters, advice from Bernie and an update on Bowling for Collars.

LOS ANGELES, CA - This is a hard
one to remember because, in our
  day-to-day "human" interactions, we
  often used each other's names-
paired with a variety of, let's just call
  them, "inflections"-to communicate
our feelings. I'm sure we're all familiar
  with the stomach-tightening feeling
  that accompanies hearing one's name
called at top volume from across the house by a partner or parent. Are you ever excited to respond to that? (The assumed response, by the way, is "No.") Now apply that same concept to your dog.

Bernie DEAR BERNIE

We are planning a car trip this
summer for our family vacation and
want to take Grainger, our 2 year old
  Lab mix with us.

  Any hints you can
give us to make this trip more
enjoyable for the whole family?  We
will be camping and staying at
  motels.

  Thank you,

  Travelling in Topanga

SUCCESS STORY

A Canine Fairy Tale

Almost 4 years ago a very
  scared 5 month old Rottie
  came to The Squad.  We
  named him Norbert.

  He huddled in the hallway
  of his foster home and
looked at the other Rotties playing but never joined in.

Read the full Fairy Tale. There is a very happy ending!
Shalom watching tvSHALOM'S PICS

My friend Stacy and I watched Hotel for
  Dogs
.  We did not like this movie at all!
There were some very scarey parts and
very mean people in it that made us
  cry!

The dogs were very cute....I loved the
big Mastiff boy, and they were very, very
smart.  But the humans in the
  movie...man....they just didn't act good
at all.  All the little boy could do was stare and open his eyes wide...BORING.  And really, what teenage girl just lets another teenage girl steal her boyfriend without getting mad?  This movie did not make us happy and we do not recommend it especially for kids who like dogs....the scarey parts were VERY scarey.

Tail down between my legs and ears back!

Peace out!

Shalom

DOG OF THE MONTH

Cinder

Meet CINDER

Cinder is an adorable and very playfull 3-month old purebred Miniature Pinscher puppy.  We found her at the shelter where she had been turned in by her owner - with a very painful injury. We're not sure what happened (and her previous guardian didn't tell the shelter) to this sweet little girl but her front leg was shattered and was in dire need of surgery.

That's when the Squad saw her and the rest is history. Cinder has had her surgery and is healing quickly - not quick enough for this playful and affectionate puppy, though.

Cinder is charming the pants off her foster parents so if you're interested in meeting her you'd better hurry down to an adoption event to meet her.
