Spring ignites new look for Lanakila! May 2008
Greetings!

Lanakila sharing exciting news with supporters at open houseWe have some exciting new changes to share with you, along with updates on our latest news and activities!  In March, we changed our name to Lanakila Pacific and also introduced new logos and names for our programs (see slideshow).

Rediscovering our mission:  Forging new paths to independence as Lanakila Pacific

Since our establishment in 1939 on Lanakila Avenue, Lanakila has been committed to providing programs and services that offer employment to people with disabilities.

In March, our name and logo changed from Lanakila Rehabilitation Center to Lanakila Pacific.  The name Lanakila Pacific expresses the tremendous growth Lanakila has experienced since our founding 69 years ago.  The name reevaluation was prompted by the organization's progression from rehabilitation services many years ago, the shift in direction towards financial self-sufficiency through our social enterprises, and our vision to extend services beyond Oahu's borders.   The word "Pacific" describes a geographic region and also means "of a peaceful, tranquil nature."

Our program names also changed to help maximize understanding of our impact in the community.

Special mahalo to THREE, a marketing group, LLC, and Market Trends Pacific for their most generous contributions of services to this project!

Largest March for Meals to date raises awareness of senior hunger on Oahu

On March 19, over 500 seniors and concerned citizens marched from Honolulu Hale to the Hawaii State Capitol as part of the largest "March for Meals" to date.  Organized by Lanakila Meals on Wheels and more!, the 6th Annual demonstration is part of a national initiative to raise awareness of senior hunger and the growing need for resources.  This year, Lanakila Meals on Wheels was successful in expanding the event to increase publicM4M Ken, Sen Sakamoto, Marian
awareness about the accelerating need for senior services as Oahu's population continues to age.

Concerned citizens joined Mayor Mufi Hannemann, Augie T., Senator Norman Sakamoto, Representatives John Mizuno and Corinne Ching, and groups such as Boy Scout Troop 150, Central Pacific Bank, the Soldiers from the 325th Unit BSB Alpha Company ACO, the Lion's Club, and TJ Mahoney & Associates, in the March to show support for Hawaii's seniors.

A new Lanakila Meals on Wheels Saturday delivery route was also announced to increase ways for volunteers to help.

Frear Eleemosynary Trust helps bolster Lanakila Pacific's campaign for much-needed renovations

Lanakila Pacific has received a $100,000 grant from the Mary D. and Walter F. Frear Eleemosynary Trust to help renovate and expand its Wahiawa Center at the Wahiawa Freshwater State Park.  This major gift will help lead the way as Lanakila Pacific moves into the next phase of its capital campaign to complete the renovation, to double its Wahiawa training programs and provide increased personal independence and work skills for individuals with disabilities.  The expansion will primarily support the growing population in the Central and West Oahu areas.

"The Distribution Committee for the Frear Eleemosynary Trust is delighted to provide this award to Lanakila for their Wahiawa facility, because of the important work they continue to do in the community," said Bank of Hawaii AVP & Grants Administrator, Paula Boyce.  Bank of Hawaii is the Trustee of the Frear Eleemosynary Trust.  "The Mary D. and Walter F. Frear Eleemosynary Trust was established by Mr. and Mrs. Frear to serve the people of Hawaii, in the areas of Education, Human Services, Arts and Culture, Health, Environment and Religion.  We are pleased to assist Lanakila in their efforts to renovate the Wahiawa facility."

Frear check presentation with Marian, Paula"We would like to thank the Frear Eleemosynary Trust for its generous support," said Marian Tsuji, president and CEO.  "It is an honor to have our capital campaign bolstered by the generosity and support of the Frear Eleemosynary Trust.  This grant and the continued support from the community will help provide our Lanakila Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) participants with a safe and conducive space that facilitates their success in becoming active members of their communities."

The Lanakila TLC program for adults with intellectual and cognitive disabilities focuses on the development and mastery of basic life skills: personal hygiene, home management, social etiquette, learning techniques and leisure interests and activities.  The program emphasizes community-based learning and inclusion, and participates in many service activities in the community.

The Mary D. and Walter F. Frear Eleemosynary Trust, established in 1934 by Chief Justice and Mrs. Frear to support community service endeavors, stands as a living legacy of their enduring commitment to and love for Hawaii and its people by supporting religious, charitable, educational and literary projects.

Walter Francis Frear devoted his life to the community, serving as a First Circuit Court Judge for the Kingdom of Hawaii, Chief Justice for the Territory of Hawaii, and as Governor of the Territory of Hawaii.  Chief Justice Frear helped to create many notable civic institutions in Hawaii such as the YMCA, the Social Service Bureau, Palama Settlement, the United Welfare Campaign, the Hawaii Historical Society and the Library of Hawaii.

Mary Dillingham Frear was also a prominent figure in community activities, organizing the YWCA in Hawaii, the College Club of Honolulu, and serving as a Regent for the University of Hawaii.  An active member in the Daughters of Hawaii and an accomplished author, Mrs. Frear is fondly remembered as a "talented woman of great kindness and personal charm who had an intense interest in the people of Hawaii and the progress of the community."
