Thanksgiving meals deliver smiles and community support
Lanakila Meals on Wheels has even more to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.
Despite the funding shortfall the program has faced this year, Lanakila Meals on Wheels continued its tradition of serving Thanksgiving meals to Oahu seniors, thanks to the outpouring of support from of hundreds of caring individuals and businesses, government and community organizations who helped fund our regular deliveries and the Thanksgiving delivery this year.
"A traditional holiday meal with turkey and all the trimmings was delivered by volunteers to our most frail and isolated seniors," said Remy Rueda, director of Lanakila Meals on Wheels. Mayor Mufi Hannemann also made a special delivery to Mr. Henry Montero. "We are so grateful for the mayor's support, as well as the 275 community volunteers who spent part of their holiday making the day brighter for these seniors."
The menu included 563 pounds of roast turkey and gravy, and all the trimmings including cranberry relish, bread stuffing and yams, mashed potatoes, peas, rolls, and fresh baked pumpkin pie.
Lanakila Meals on Wheels extends a special mahalo to all the volunteers who helped, including Mayor Hannemann, Damien High School Leo Club, 21st Dental Company, Ka Hale Ho'ala Hou No Na Wahine, a transitional residential program for women leaving the women's prison, HGEA, Kaimuki Dental Group, Hickam Federal Women's Program, HMA, Summerlin, Temple Emanu-el, Lion's Clubs, Rising Phoenix Jaycees, Matson Navigation, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - Day Saints, and The Biker's Association. |

Lion King performers visit Lanakila and share their passion
Bringing songs, laughter and dance, cast members of The Lion King paid a special visit to Lanakila and performed for over 150 adults with disabilities and seniors. Actors included Geno Segers (Mufasa), Clifton Oliver (Simba), Young Simba performers Trevor Jackson and Nicholas Ashe, and Young Nala performers Diamond Curvy and Jamani Epps.
Segers offered some insight into his character of Mufasa, who is always trying to help someone every time he steps on stage, "He tries to help Zazu understand his place as the major domo; Simba with preparing for the responsibilities in his life; and even Scar with being a more supportive family member."
Segers also tries to live his life accordingly, "My mother taught my brother and I that if you can help someone, help them, because it won't be long before you fall down and will need some help as well." One of the central themes of The Lion King is that you can't live life alone--you're always going to need help from family and friends.
In addition to song performances that included "I Just Can't Wait to be King," "Circle of Life," and "Song for You," cast members also involved the audience in providing background vocals and participating in a dance combinations.
In appreciation of the visit, Lanakila's Adult Day Service group Hands in Harmony sang and signed the lyrics to "The Greatest Love of All," which moved many to tears. Performers were also presented with Parol, Philippine star Christmas lanterns, which were handmade by ADS participants to express their appreciation.
Clifton Oliver (Simba) also shared that The Lion King cast and crew is like a family, "It's so nice to be around people who love you, who care about you, and who are concerned about you." He also said that being part of the Lion King family and show is a privilege, because the message of The Lion King is so amazing: "Whatever you want, you can get-you just have to figure out what you want and where you want to be. Always know that you can do it, no matter what!"
A special mahalo to Cam Baxter and Rosemary Smith who helped bring the magic of The Lion King to Lanakila. |
