Welcome St. Joseph Healthcare in Bangor, ME
Covenant
Health Systems welcomed St. Joseph Healthcare as a member on
Friday, July 29, as the Felician
Sisters, who have sponsored St. Joseph Hospital/Healthcare since 1947,
transferred sponsorship to Covenant in a ceremonial signing event. (St. Joseph
has been an affiliate of Covenant Health Systems since 2001.)
"The decision to move toward full
membership and allow Covenant to provide official sponsorship of St. Joseph
Healthcare was made to ensure the long term viability of St. Joseph as a
Catholic identified ministry," said Sr.
Mary Christopher, CSSF, provincial minister of the
Felician Congregation of North America
"Today we welcome the St. Joseph Healthcare community into
our Covenant family," said Joyce Arel,
chair, Covenant Board. "We are
honored, and blest, by this relationship. We will work towards common goals... to heal as Jesus did, to care when we
cannot always cure, to promote wellness for persons and communities and always
with special attention to our neighbors who are poor, underserved and most vulnerable."
David R.
Lincoln, Covenant President/CEO, added, "We are grateful to the
Felician Sisters for the richness they bring to our Covenant ministry and thank
Sr. Mary Norberta Malinowski,
president/CEO, and her staff for the wisdom they share within Covenant.

About the
Felician Sisters Congregation who founded St. Joseph Hospital
In 1825, Blessed Mary Angela
Truszkowska, foundress of the Felician Sisters, was born Sophia Camille in
Kalisz, Poland of well-educated and devout parents. From her earliest years,
her deep piety was coupled with a strong recognition of the needs of the people
of her time: the plight of the youth, widows and elderly.
By 1854, she had crystallized a vision of her mission as she set about to seek
help for the forsaken children of Warsaw's inner city and the elderly
homeless. In 1855, Sophia became a
member of the Third Order of St. Francis and took the name Angela. On November of
that year, she and her cousin consecrated themselves to do God's will. This was
the beginning of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Felix of Cantalice,
Third Order of St. Francis, more popularly known as the Felician Sisters. In 1874, Angela heartily endorsed
sending sisters to America and personally blessed the first five Felician
Sisters as they left for Polonia, Wisconsin, where they worked with Polish
immigrants as well as with the Winnebago and Menomonee Indians. Mother Mary Angela Truszkowska was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1993.

Covenant "A" Bond Rating Affirmed
Both Fitch and Standard & Poor's affirmed Covenant's "A"
bond rating. Fitch affirmed an "A"
outlook stable, and Standard & Poor affirmed an "A" outlook negative. Fitch explaines that Covenant Health Systems' primary credit strength "is its geographic and revenue diversity." |

Around the System
St. Joseph Manor Health Care (Brockton) has been recognized as a 2010
recipient of the Bronze - Commitment to Quality, National Quality Award
presented by the American Health Care Association and National Center for
Assisted Living, a trade organization with approximately 11,000 members
nationwide. St. Joseph Manor was
one of over 450 organizations to receive the award. "The commitment
to quality designated by this award is a key first step to developing
systematic, sustainable, person-centered care and services," stated Bruce
Yarwood, President and CEO of AHCA/NCAL. "St. Joseph Manor may now move forward
in developing approaches and achieving performance levels that meet the
criteria required for the Silver - Achievement in Quality award. The final step
in the journey is the Gold - Excellence in Quality award which requires them to
address the Baldrige Program's Health Care Criteria for Performance Excellence
in its entirety."
The
Maine Health Management Coalition has given St. Joseph Hospital (Bangor) a "full pie" for patient
experience. A "full pie"
means that St. Joseph Hospital scores are equal to or better than the top 10%
of hospitals in the United States.
In addition, they rank St.
Joseph Hospital as a "better choice" in the areas of heart attack, heart
failure and pneumonia. They also
rank St. Joseph Hospital as the "best choice" in relation to the rate of
surgical infection prevention.
Citing clinical expertise and quality of care, Anthem Blue
Cross and Blue Shield in Maine has designated St. Mary's Health System (Lewiston) as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement
Surgery.Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate an
expertise and reliability in quality special care on a consistent basis,
resulting in better overall outcomes for patients. This designation is based on rigorous, evidence-based
selection criteria established in collaboration with expert physician and
medical organization recommendations.
Healing Gardens
As the staff at St. Joseph Healthcare (Bangor) believes that a beautiful garden can
uplift a person's mood and improve health, they have undertaken an initiative
to thank the hundreds of people in the greater Bangor community creating
beautiful gardens for their own enjoyment and that of others. This summer, St. Joseph employees
are fanning out across the area, each with special door hangers to recognize
the incredible gardens in their own neighborhoods. The door hanger also makes
that gardener eligible for a St. Joseph Healing Spaces Award and the winner
will be featured in an upcoming edition of St. Joseph Healthcare's "In the
Spirit of Healing" magazine sent to 60,000 people.

In addition, in 2009, employees were
challenged to "Adopt a Plot" of green space at one of St. Joe's
campuses and create a beautiful garden.
These gardens provide patients and visitors with a welcoming experience
and friendly greeting.Each garden
team is provided with just $100 from an employee funded activity committee - and
many team members use their own money to enhance their garden spaces. Employees transform their "plots
of land" before and after working hours. This year they are repeating the concept but employees are
challenged to incorporate vegetables into their garden plot. All the vegetables grown will help
provide produce for the St. Joseph Vegetable Exchange Stand. This allows those with excess vegetables
to drop off their produce at the stand and community members are invited to
take what they can use. Remaining
items are provided to community programs geared to helping the hungry.
St.
Mary Regional Medical Center (Lewiston), under the leadership of Mike Grimmer, vice president/division leader of Facilities
Management, has been
accepted into the 2010 Green Guide Operations Pilot. The Green
Guide for Health Care, in collaboration with Practice Greenhealth, is launching
a one-year Green Guide for Health Care Operations Pilot Program for healthcare
organizations engaged in any or all aspects of green operations initiatives,
based on Green Guide v2.2 Operations section. The intent of the Operations
Pilot is to create a learning community of peers to share best practices across
the different areas that comprise sustainable health care operations using
web-based tools and resources, and to facilitate market transformation as the
Green Guide evolves to meet the sustainability guidance needs of the healthcare
community.
Benefits
of participation include recognition on the Green Guide website as an early
adopter, a leadership role in shaping new tool development, and enhanced access
to professional services. The Operations Pilot program is designed to track
real-time facility implementation and obtain quantifiable feedback.
Participation may be confidential upon request.

diverse population together. After graduation in 1999 and with backing from
Saint Mary's Health System, Kirsten spent the next seven years transforming the
gardens into a larger, community-wide project called "Lots to Gardens." The
project now includes fifteen gardens and green spaces, programs for children,
youth, adults and senior citizens, apartment-side gardens, neighborhood
vegetable stands, weekly community meals, monthly cooking and nutrition classes
and community nutrition education trainings. She has also spearheaded an effort

foods, leveraging new resources to solve identified problems, and determining
how to involve the community in each and every aspect, from assessment to
solutions.

empowers Somali women to spread nutrition messages to others in an oral-based
culture in collaboration with the Maine Nutrition Network, the United Somali
