1,000 trees planted in Haiti in honor of Covenant's environmental initiatives

planiting   Practice Greenhealth's 2010 Environmental Excellence
Award Winners were honored through a partnership
with "Trees for the Future". Each recipient will have
100 trees planted per award, and Covenant members
   received 10 awards.

Three Covenant members received the Partner for
   Change with Distinction Award.
They were:
        MI Nursing Restorative Center (Lawrence),

At a minimum this includes at least 15% recycling, a more extensive sustainability program, and a show of leadership in the local community and/or in the health care sector.

Receiving the Partner for Change Award were:

     St. Andre Health Care (Biddeford),

     St. Mary's Health Care (Worcester),

     St. Joseph Hospital (Nashua), and

     St. Mary's Health System (Lewiston).

Receiving the Partner Recognition Award were:

Maristhill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (Waltham) and

Youville House Assisted Living Residence (Cambridge).

In addition, Covenant Health Systems was one of five systems to receive the System for Change Award at the annual meeting in Baltimore.

As a system, Covenant has won this award every year since its environmental initiatives began in 2004. This award is bestowed on health systems working cohesively to collect facility-specific data, capture sustainability activity, set system goals, benchmark, and share successes in environmental performance at a system level.

Practice Greenhealth is the nation's leading membership and networking organization for institutions in the healthcare community that have made a commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly practices. Members include hospitals, healthcare systems, businesses and other stakeholders engaged in the greening of healthcare to improve the health of patients, staff and the environment.

New Quality Dashboard

Thanks to members of Covenant's work group headed by Susan Keiler, St. Mary's (Lewiston) COO, with the technical assistance of Nate Greene, Covenant has initiated a new quality dashboard which includes metrics in the areas of access to care, effectiveness of care, patient experience, workforce engagement, and financial performance. There is also an "end-of-life" metric, related to respecting end-of-life wishes.

Covenant Meetings:
On the Road to "Going Paperless"

Covenant is using Microsoft's "SharePoint" to disseminate meeting information to committee members. The first roll-out of this system was to the Financial Committee members for their meeting in May. Eventually all committee and board members will use this system.

St. Mary's Regional Medical Center (Lewiston) posts Emergency Room wait times (door to provider) on their website at www.stmarysmaine.com. The times are updated automatically every several minutes. St. Mary's goal is to have most patients seen by a medical provider within 30 minutes of entering the ER.

Congratulations to d'Youville Pavilion (Lewiston) on their deficiency-free survey and to Covenant's skilled nursing facilities which received "5 star quality ratings" from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as of April, 2010. They are:
     Bethany Health Care Center (Framingham),
     Campion Health Center (Weston),
Fall River Jewish Home (Fall River),
and
     St. Mary's Villa (Pennsylvania).

St. Joseph Hospital (Nashua) has retained Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program for excellence in nursing services. They have once again designated St. Joseph Hospital as a Magnet hospital.

According to the ANCC, Magnet designation is widely accepted as the gold standard of patient care. The program recognizes excellence and professionalism in nursing. Applicants undergo an extensive evaluation, and members who are awarded Magnet status must continue to maintain rigorous standards as part of their four-year designation.

Congratulations, too, to Maristhill Nursing & Rehabilitation (Waltham) on celebrating their 40th anniversary this year.

Palliative Care

Covenant's Pain and Palliative Care Committee headed by Sr. Catherine O'Connor, CSB, Ph.D., DAPA, Covenant's Vice President, Mission and Sponsorship and Louise Clough, Covenant's Director of Clinical & Administrative Support invited Esther Charves, Family Services Coordinator, New England Organ Bank, to talk about organ donations.

More than 100,000 Americans are waiting for lifesaving organ transplants and many more wait for donated tissues. On average, 17 people in this country die every day - 6,600 each year - waiting for organ transplant. The reason is simple - a tragic shortage of donated organs and tissues. Charves told the committee that although most people support donation, many have not taken the important step of signing up to be a donor. She explained that it is easier than ever to make your wishes known by signing up at the "Donate Life New England Organ and Tissue Donor Registry" at www.neob.org

The committee was also introduced to the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) www.capc.org, which provides health care professionals with the tools, training and technical assistance necessary to start and sustain successful palliative care programs in hospitals and other health care settings. Located at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, CAPC is a national organization dedicated to increasing the availability of quality palliative care services for people facing serious, complex illness.

Covenant's "Health Care Ministry Concepts for Leaders" for mid-level managers has been a tremendous success. The next one-day program is being held Tuesday, June 22 at Covenant's corporate office and on Friday, November l2 at St. Mary's in Lewiston. Evaluations have been outstanding, with leaders saying that they better understand the connection between the "Catholic" side and the corporate side of Covenant.Attendees said they understand better that: "We all are continuing the mission on a daily basis by doing our jobs;" "It is not only up to just the religious to care, it is up to us as well," and "that what I do and how I do it does matter and is appreciated."

Anyone who is interested in attending should contact their HR Director.
