VFA is a nonprofit organization for veterans of the Second Wave of the feminist movement. The goals are to enjoy the camaraderie forged during those years of intense commitment, to honor ourselves and our heroes, to document our history, to rekindle the spark and spirit of the feminist revolution and act as keeper of the flame so that the ideals of feminism continue to reverberate and influence others.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, September 15, 2012
Plan to travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for VFA's next big event: "Empowering Women: A Tale of Two Generations."
The event will be held at Alverno College, and VFA will be honoring Alverno for its history of providing innovative higher education for women. Since 1887 the College has been committed to developing the individual power of women through excellence in teaching.
The full-day event will celebrate the achievements of the women's movement of the '60s and '70s, evaluate where we are today and discuss how the feminists of yesterday and today move forward together to continue the struggle for women's rights.
We are very excited about our first panel discussion, "Are We There Yet?" It will feature two women who worked at Newsweek 40 years apart.
VFA Board members Mary Jean Collins, Mary-Ann Lupa and Kathy Rand are providing leadership for the event.
Find more details and a registration form on the event website, www.vfa-midwest.org.
We hope to see you in Milwaukee!

PAULI MURRAY, A FOUNDER OF NOW, SAINTED BY THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH
Pauli Murray A combative, chain-smoking pixie on the wrong side of history is the not the typical profile of a saint, yet this is how Pauli Murray described herself. Last month the Episcopal Church admitted Murray to the pantheon of "Holy Women, Holy Men: Celebrating the Saints" in honor of her efforts toward "the universal cause of freedom."
The first African American woman ordained an Episcopal priest, Pauli Murray (1910-1985) was so much more. Lawyer, poet, memoirist, polemicist, expat constitutional law professor in Ghana, co-founder of NOW, mentor to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and friend to Eleanor Roosevelt, Murray forged intersections between American movements for black freedom, peace, and women's liberation. PAULA KASSELL- FOUNDER AND EDITOR OF NEW DIRECTIONS FOR WOMEN, THE FIRST NATIONAL FEMINIST NEWSPAPER LEAVES US AT AGE 95 One of the most beloved of the pioneer feminists, Paula Kassell was a co founder of the Lakeland, NJ chapter of NOW, which later merged with Morristown NOW to become Morris County NOW.
Paula continued to be a very active member until very recently, consulting and appearing several times on the chapter's public access TV show, which was named after her newspaper, New Directions for Women. Besides editing and writing a column for New Directions, she created a series of feminist conferences in the 1970s and 1980s and established the Positive Image of Women Award.
Paula was instrumental in getting the New York Times to use the term Ms, and convincing The Times and other newspapers to integrate the Help Wanted Ads. In her last year Paula wasn't satisfied with the quality of her life and made the decision to stop eating. Friends had tried to dissuade her, but failing, they came from all over to say goodbye.
Mavra Stark reports that, the day before her death Paula was listening to opera and talking to friends and family on the phone. Besides her many friends, she leaves a son, Daniel. Her daughter, Claire died of breast cancer a few years ago. Paula herself defeated breast cancer twice. There will be no funeral service, as Paula donated her body to a medical school . A memorial , which she helped to plan, will be held in late September or early October.
For condolences, Daniel Kassell dankassell@aol.com. |
